I wouldn't go to South Shields, Northumberland would be good...but I'd rather stay at the caravan park at Flamingo Land! Lets not forget, the North-East is hardly renowned for it's good weather and if your planning on a few days on the beach I wouldn't hold out hope!

Meh, second thoughts, scrap it all. Go to the Lake District. You know it makes sense :)

Definately go Northumberland. We used to go to Warkworth/Amble a lot and would go back. The beaches are beautiful. We go to Shields just for the day but I think I wouldn't like to stay there really.

Go for Alnwick and you'll be 'central' to things like Seahouses, Warkworth (the beach is lovely and its quiet), Alnmouth and Amble.
Or as Mark says head to the Lakes. Love it there too. xx
Just to win anything would be great!!

I've just re-read and it says you have a 17-month old. Who will only care about, *beach* and not much else :). South Sheilds is more interesting to the 6-7 year old upwards IMO.

Anyway, since you live in County Durham, why are you going on holiday to South Shields, that's day trip distance that!

Get yourself away up the Northumberland Coast, you won't regret it!

Lol, yes im in County Durham but its our first outing in the caravan so we didnt want to go too far as we dont have a clue what we are doing.

Northumberland seems to be the prefered choice and had I of found a caravan site right on the beach then I would probably be asking about that instead :D Also agree that the Lakes are fantastic but we thought it a little too far for the first trip just incase we had to come home for anything!

I spent my 21st birthday in South Shields (only the daytime) and had a great time on the lake, steam train and beach and though our daughter would enjoy doing the same things. I must admit it is years since I have been there (dont venture out of Co Durham much!) and it sounds as though it has been updated a bit but the rough teens on a night time are putting me off, although on the other hand I dont really want to sit in a boring Northumberland field for a weekend...

Seahouses is lovely but around that area when we went in August 2006 it was windy and quite exposed, Bamburgh castle is lovely just down the road. There is a nicesecluded little beach at Bamburgh which you can get down to by car down a narrow road the castle is just on right of that photo. There is a ncie little stream running along there. We went one night at around 9.30pm just getting dark light for castle come on about 10pm absolutely lovely view of castle and when you go in car park you get some nice shots of it

Do you live in South Shields itself eslick?

about 20 minutes away, the metro probably would take 20-30 mins but its only 7 from my house to Newcastle so havent done it for years. As said our kids love the beach if thats what you are there for then it will be a good few days, they will love the park as well. We go to the beach all year round, been the only ones there in the winterand it does get busy in the summer. There are also free shows on at a weekend.

There might be other places but in tyne and wear south shields does have the best beaches.

Oh just seen the comments about Scarborough have to say only been there twice, went the second time as I was told I was wrong the first and still found it the worst place in the world so every one has there own opinions :)

Another reply from me. I have to say that yes, your little one probably would enjoy a day in South Shields despite what I said in my original post. You'd need good weather mind you, but thats the same for any beach holiday.

I stand by my negative comments tho, particularly about the rowdiness from 1700 onwards.

As for a caravan holiday close to a beach what about Cresswell Towers near Druridge Bay (Park Resorts) which is two minutes away from beach and a good base to explore the area.

Whatever you decide a holiday is what you make it at the end of the day so I'm sure you'll have fun whatever decision you make.

I LOVE Scarborough. We went on honeymoon last year near there (the log cabins in the woods near pickering) and had a great time. Our little girl loved the arcades and beach and Pea something park even more, it was pretty cold in November but we will always love the place :D

Its only really the rowdiness that is putting me off to be honest. Does anyone know if the caravan park itself will be quiet? its called Sandhaven and is just behind the park with the lake. From memery I dont think there are any pubs along there but its right opposite the shows which I would imagine is where bored kids hang out

Couldnt agree more (as long as your not mugged or murdered whilst there )
