I looked under device manager and found PCI device is flagged and has no driver.
Having trouble finding out which device it is. Details below:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2668&SUBSYS_01C91028&REV_03\3&61AAA01&0&D8
Any help appreciated

According to this it's an Intel 82801FB (ICH6) High Definition Audio Controller. What version of Windows are you using?0

Windows Xp20 -
I suggest you install SP3; it includes the prerequisites for your audio driver.0

Thanks. I've just done a clean install and even as this thread was going on Windows update was installing SP3. It did indeed cure the problem.
However, I now have another device to fix which wasn't there before.
Found New Hardware Wizard gives this error:
IDT High definition Audio CODEC
This device cannot start. (Code 10)0 -
It's probably just missing a driver. Right-click the offending device from within Device Manager and select Update Driver. If prompted, allow Windows to connect to Windows Update.0

Yes I've been following screens to do that but with no success. The error message on Device manager now says its a missing driver
I feel like I've spent the whole weekend in Device Manager. So many of my saved drivers haven't worked after the disc format.
The details for this one show this:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7690&SUBSYS_102801C9&REV_1022\4&1D1AAA2D&0&0001
