Cardboard Boxes

Does anyone know any good places to get cardboard boxes from? I've asked around on Freecycle but no-one replied, and Supermarkets and shops have been telling me they crush them and soon as they're emptied. I'm moving house soon and desperately need some, and I think paying £10 for 3 boxes is ridiculous! So if anyone has any good reliable sources that would be very helpful :)

  • The local charity shops seem to throw a lot of carboard boxes away.

Other shops might be clothes, toys and pound shops.

You need to catch them on delivery day though as they're usually crushed pretty quickly.

Have you tried speaking to the duty manager at your local supermarket?
I know they are flat packed when empty (supermarket employee),however,we get requests regularly and we keep them for the customer to collect usually the next morning.
When you get them, just fold them back up and tape the bottom.

I've used mad4boxes.co.uk in the past, 30 boxes with bubble wrap, marker pen and tape for £42 delivered for example. Yes supermarket boxes are free, but thought I'd mention it as if you are in a hurry and want boxes of a uniform size they are good as they supply various packs with next day delivery. A quick tip is to get lots of extra bubble wrap and perhaps some more packing tape to help protect valuables.

I've just been asking the checkout people and shop floor staff for boxes, but will try the duty manager. We have a few charity shops up the road so will also ask in there. I got a few crisp boxes from the corner shop so will keep an eye out for when they're getting a delivery, and nip in quick because they're always nice about things. Thanks for the help

Try fruit & veg dept. in Morrisons ask them to save you some banana boxes. When I worked there was always getting asked for them. First thing in the morning is best time to pick them up, before they go in crusher. Or anytime you are shopping and you see them putting out bananas. Can be a bit hit and miss.

Just popped out to send a birthday card and decided to pop into the corner shop near it and ask, they had a big stash behind the counter and let me take loads :T Will probably be popping back in there to try my luck again

We are moving flat soon too and I went into my local Asda and asked them about boxes.

They said they break them up but the kind lady went to the back of the store to see if they had any and gave me a few, which was great :)

I normally find that if you go to the customer desk at the supermarket and ask then they will bring a load through.
Our local tesco is promoting the use of boxes instead of bags and will give you 4 clubcard points for each one you use.

had same problem when moving years ago - someone managed to get me boxes from the smaller local shops - asked in advance, and arranged for them to be picked up after stock was unpacked and they were happy to get rid of them. The local electrical retailer was particularly helpful - had boxes after unpacking tv's , stereos etc., might be worth a shot if you have one nearby.

Maybe larger stores too such as Currys / Focus / Dixons type places would be able to give you some before they are squashed and recycled.?

    good luck
