Lambeg drums!

  • Never quite got the old "lambeg drum" maybe it's an "Ulster Scots" thing (something else I've never quite got to grips with either... is it a language or a dialect?? ... oops think I may have opened a can of worm there!!)

you can always rely on the marching season to bring all he old rivalries etc back to the fore... I have to say as a protestant who was brought up going to many as parade (don't think if missed a twelfth till I went to Uni) I think no matter how the orange order try to dress it up, it'll never be "welcomming" to a catholic or any person without strong unionist views...

In my own view I don't think it's the Orange men themselves that cause the "offence".. a lot of it is the bands which now looking back at it can be quite intimidating. Particularly the flute bands... I think anyone would find it hard to be intimidated by an accordian or a set of bagpipes.

I've been to many small local village parades as a boy where it may be just two or three pipe/accordian bands and the local orange lodges and there were often local catholic residants who came out to watch as it wasn't crammed down their throat and was all very low key and appropriate.. a case of orange men marching around a village to a local church service which is what it should be about..

My OH (who is catholic) made a comment the other week which when thinking about it was so true. We were having a leasurly sunday country drive through Co. Armagh & Down and passed through many towns/villages with the usual OTT hoard of flags flying from every lamp post or errect structure possible. When we were driving through Hillsborough, yes there was the flags but, my wife said... Being Hillsborough and having Hillsborough Castle where the queen & politicins reside when over here and the fact that the flags were done in a tastefull manor (no sign of offensive flags (just union flags)) it actully was not offensive or intimidating.. it actully looked like there was a royal visit expected...
So maybe it's a case of lots of these towns and village have no taste when it comes to putting up flags. Do we really need them hanging from every lamp post??? it actually (in my opinion) looks crap... less is more!! and as we are now in "Peaceful" times do we really need these paramilitery type flags flying alongside a Union flag... this is what causes offence and actually very much "cheapens" the union flag.

warmhands.coldheart, get yourself out to markethill lambeg drumming match, held on the last saturday in July. When you're up close and hear a good lambeg drum 'hum', and its on the point of breaking, you'll understand why its a big thing here.

all this s-hit-e should be banned,no marches no flags on all sides as it only melts the heads of the next generation and we need to give them a clear head to think without all this sectarianism, seen on UTV flags and banners supporting both the UDA and UVF on the marches............does the orange order support these groups?

I agree. Flags on every lamppost do look a hash. I think all flags should be stripped from lampposts although they don't allow the union flag to be flown from official buildings, so I suppose, what else do they expect? So I say, put the Union flag back up on official buildings and strip all the rest. Might make the place look a bit more decent...;)

Why are the marches sectarian? It's only the small element who piggy back that make it so.

My parents remember when the Catholics came out to watch the parades. Why can't we go back to that and have a day for everyone? The only reason there is friction is because they've been told to think that way. I'm not they could give an answer as to why they don't like it other than the usual Brits out.

What's really sad is that the flags which were put up for the twelfth will still be there, tattered, ragged and forlorn, come next year in the town I live in. Any remnants will be taken down in order to put up next years lot. Do these people have no repsect for their flags?

It is hard not to believe that they are merely put up to provoke the other community when they are shown so little respect by those who fly them.

In response to the "original poster" ...
    Very good, made me chuckle

For the whingers & winers, why not start your own thread of boredom. I dare say most of us are sick of it

I had the joy of listening to them practice most of Saturday and then marching up my street at 7 in the morning of the 13th, I was up for work but however it did wake my children. As for the flags I've had a lovely UVF flag planted on the lamppost outside my house - tbh I've always thought them like dogs marking their territory 'I've p****d on this lamppost so it's mine'. Lovely.

Well it seems that some 'people' have no respect for any flags of any kind from what i can tell.
Last week Crumlin was decorated with Antrim flags for the forthcoming Ulster Final against Tyrone and low & behold the flags where taken down the night before the 12 marches, hatred at its highest there ehh, but thankfully new flags have been erected at a much higher point hopefully this will deter the scum from doing it again.
