Immersion Heater Thermostatic Element

I have an immersion heater which has been in use for less than five years. It has a top and bottom element which have separate rocker switches. Two and a half years ago I had to replace both elements as their thermostats had apparently gone. The flat was let before this so don't know how the immersion was used by my tenant.
I live here now and only use the top (smaller) element and have the hot water set to come on for forty five minutes overnight. In recent months I have noticed the hot water being too hot to use 'neat' and suspect the thermostat has gone again. How long should these things last? Two years and then two and a half years seems quite poor.

They are a bit like light bulbs, they either last for ages, or some don't last very long at all.
Good news, they are cheap and simple to replace, you do not need a new immersion heater element, just the thermostat.
Just make sure that you get the correct one, they vary in length.0 -
And it might be sods law or it might be “they don’t make them like they used to” but the ‘stat that was in our heater when we moved in (1985) was still working when the element went in 2007.
The stat that came with the new element lasted less than 2 years and we are now back on the original pre ’85 stat (which I’d kept on the grounds it would come in handy one day)0
