Duty free allowence Gatwick/Turkey

Hi,
Were traveling to Turkey tonight from Gatwick. Im aware the duty free allowence for bringing back cigarettes in 200 from Turkey.

Can I buy 400 from Gatwick, take them to turkey and then bring them back along with 200 Turkish cigarettes back into the UK? If so, does the same apply with spirts?

Im presuming at Gatwick you can only buy cigarettes and spirits before your deparure and not once you have come back.

First time out of the UK, so want to make sure I get it right!

  • If you bring back more than 200 cigs per adult from Turkey you are over your duty free limit regardless of where you bought them. You can also bring back 1 litre of spirits per adult, duty free. You can of course bring back more, but if you do you will need to declare them and pay the tax, or risk confiscation. You are right in presuming that duty free at Gatwick is only available for departures.

    Thanks for your reply.

I thought if I bought 400 cigarettes from gatwick, it would follow the EU allowance of 3200 cigarettes?

Only the 200 I purchase from Turkey would be the limit

Turkey will only let you import 200 when you arrive from Gatwick

Turkey is not in the EU so the EU limits do not apply. You will find 2 prices at Gatwick, the Duty Paid (EU higher price) and Duty Free lower price. It's the Duty Free you need to buy.

I believe the allowance is the same going into Turkey as coming back to the UK, 200 cigs and 1L spirits.

Be careful where you buy your cigs in Turkey as there are a lot of fakes and the only safe place to buy them is the Duty Free at the airport. Lots of questions and answers HERE
