You say you don't want an overdraft, but do you want a basic bank account (no possibility of an overdraft, no cheque book, etc.)?What would William Shatner do?0

Most banks offer a similar account. If you have bad credit, or a history of, either Barclays or the Co-Op are the most lenient banks, even accepting bankrupts for their basic accounts (not that you necessarily are, of course).
Just about any other bank can offer you a basic account with a debit card, and will function in near enough the same way - no credit interest, no overdraft, no cheque books and so forth.
Some banks restrict services to their basic account customers, particularly for counter services (HSBC, Halifax, Nationwide all do this; Lloyds restricts their customers to their own ATMs), so those are the ones to avoid if you need a "full service" bank. Some banks also do not accept Bank Giro Credit bills if you still use them (Halifax, Abbey).
With those caveats in mind, it's just about choosing the bank that's most convenient for you. What would William Shatner do?0 -
thank you....
Never though of the Co-op... but Barclays may be easier.
Never been bankrupt but have been in debt... something that i am now not in and am looking to remove the whole temptation of spending what i dont have... hence no OD etc... a banks worse nightmare customer :-)
thanks for advice !0
