Call The Gazelle naieve, but why were you writing cheques out that bounce? Did this cheque get written whilst you were some £40 overdrawn? The only way Lloyds TSB or any other bank could not stop a cheque would be if it was guaranteed, which I assume was not the case for you, as you would have stated this. Was this overdrawn amount an amount you went over an overdraft, or was it an "unauthorized amount" without an overdraft in place?
Without you going into specifics, it is hard to tell what you have, or have not been charged for, or indeed whether I would suggest these charges to be fair and accurate, The Gazelle feels you should put your efforts into seeing why the need for you claiming charges is needed, as if you hadn't accrued these charges in the first place, you wouldn't feel the need to try and reclaim them back, The Gazelle thinks that you may not be addressing the real issue to hand, and that may be the fact that you may not be budgeting your money that well, to be getting such charges in the past two months, perhaps you should start a fresh and open a new account, and have what money you have paid into that, and live within the income you have, if you have an overdraft, use it in the knowledge that you can safely pay it back, and furthermore, be aware that it can easily be pulled as fast as it is added, so if your "maxed" out, and salary goes in, and you end up losing your overdraft, you also lose your salary for that month also, a dangerous game!!

Why is one cheque bounced 8 times is what NatWestStaffMember wants to know?
Most banks will have a policy on returning the one cheque ie Refer to Drawer Please Represent followed by Refer to Drawer so the cheque doesn't simply bounce again like a kangaroo in the outback.

Bounce the cheque if there are insufficient amount but the same cheque 8 times????
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

Exactly my point, especially as both the recipient and I had requested that it was not presented any more after the first time and I immediately paid in cash instead.
But my bank told me it could not be stopped.
I don't believe the charges were representative; how hard was it to check the account to see the funds weren't available?
    Maybe I'm over simplifying it.

They are right and they are wrong, once it is presented first time and it is returned, "Refer To Drawer Please Represent" when it is represented which is done automatically then it should have been returned "Refer to Drawer".
Ask the bank for a copy of that specific cheque, can you?

Ok thanks I'll give them a call.
I assume because it should have the "refer" wording on the cheque itself?
  • Yes and probably stamped on it a few times as well.
Ask them for their policy on returning a single cheque unpaid cos someone you know who works for a bank said they could only return the same cheque unpaid twice.
    Make sense ;)

I would not say naieve, I would say condescending.
I do not have a salary as I am unemployed, for the first time in my life.
I am in a situation of financial hardship, so my account is always close to overdrawn.
So you are right - I am not budgeting very well! Congratulations!
The funds were available when I wrote the cheque, but charges took me into overdraft.
It was Lloyds TSB who continued to present the cheque, adding more charges each time, even though both parties asked them to stop.
I'm sorry I didn't explain my whole life story in the first place, it was only a short post!
And yes, I do acknowledge that there are bigger problems in my life than the unfair bank charges, but this is one I can fix.

    Clear Posts avoid mis-understandings!!

I still feel that opening a new account and starting over would be a good option, avoid further charges and keep what money you have to use for what you need.

I hope you are able to sort out your situation to your own advantage, The Gazelle was not Patronizing, merely going on information supplied, and responded accordingly to what I had read.:j

I was really making a point about Lloyds TSB in keeping with the topic, rather than trying to illustrate all my problems.

And there were a number of conclusions you could have reached. The one you got to wasn't the most obvious, in my opinion.

I believe I have mentioned the other details in other topics and it didn't seem relevent here.

Anyway, I do have another account (with Barclays) which I probably should use more.
Shame I don't have online access though, as I like to watch accounts day by day to try to avoid problems like this one, but at least I won't be writing any cheques in future!
