Weird postal exploit??

Hi all,
Probably not the right place for this, couldn't work out if anywhere was...

We moved into a new place 4 weeks ago, then immediately went on holiday for a few weeks, and just got back. While away, a DPD couriers 'sorry we missed you' card was put thru the door, then the following day a 'we left your parcel with your neighbours' card.
Oddly, it seemed they'd left it with a neighbour 5 doors down rather than any of the immediate neighbours. I also wasn't expecting any parcel but we have a young baby and people do sometimes send us stuff.

When I spoke to the neighbours, they said yes, a parcel had been left, and later that day/the following day (they forget which) a guy came and collected it, claiming to be from our address. He was black, which neither I nor anyone at this address in the previous 3 years are.

What sort of weird behaviour is this? Is it a scam somehow? Anyone any ideas?

Thanks!

Have you asked around any of your friends to see if they mailed you anything? Or asked the neighbours closer to you if they were in that day? If none of them answered the door then it makes sense for the parcel to be left that far away from your house, otherwise I can see no reason for it  Maybe the guy saw the delivery van pull up at your house, and then leave the parcel and just tried his luck? Did the neighbour ask for his name to check it matched the slip?
D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't important

Do the neighbours that took in the parcel seem honest and trustworthy. The cynic in me says that the most probable answer is that they have kept the parcel and made up the story about someone coming to collect it.

The problem I have with the story about the unknown guy (Mr X) is that he would have to have been watching your house or shadowing the delivery guy (or in cahoots with him) to know that the parcel was taken to the neighbours.

Yep - clear and obvious scam.

Take out an account at your address using details of old resident. Arrange for parcel to be delivered, but leave instructions to leave at specified house if not in.

    Clear fraud.

How can they be sure the householder won't be in?

It would be a simple thing for the driver to attempt to deliver on 2 consecutive days, take a guess you're on holiday, then drop it off 5 doors down for his mate to pick up.

Someone 5 doors down is far less likely to know you.
