Not if the rear subframe is fine and it's got a strong clutch still in it..... - oddly a lot of private people bought Ghia Xs that are loaded to the gunwhales and are very cheap now. I like them but I do accept they require more diligence than most.

As for VFM FWD, I am a 3.1D trooper or SWB pre 1996 Landcruiser fan myself....

The car (assuming 1.25) is worth about £2,500 to a trader if it's about 40K miles. Private it's worth about £3,100 to £3,400 to sell depending on who turns up to buy. Sorry, but it's heading towards half a decade old and it's not exactly rare. The 1.4 and 1.6 are not worth any more (worth talking about). If it's got aircon it will sell a lot quicker and for more.

If you own the thing outright, you are taking a £1000 (the cost of an engine, gearbox or something big) gamble on an older car with more miles that you don't know. If it were me, I would keep what I have unless I really needed £2K that much or were mechanically minded enough not to buy a lemon. The potential to lose out on both the sale and the purchase could easily eat that £2K and leave you with no working car. Unless you know what you are buying, you will end up paying a lot for a much older car with uncertain provenance and more potential for bills.

Corsa is OK but has niggles with electrics and if it's a Clio for god's sake buy a basic one without lots of added extras, good fun when they work but so expensive to fix - French engineers are good, French electricians not so good - and don't buy an automatic if it's French..... (google Renault Laguna and automatic gearbox problem if you want to see why).

With respect, it's a lot cheaper to simply not insure the 18 year old on it and if he wants to buy a Clio or Corsa (and show the world he knows sod all about cars BTW [as a drive a Corsa is crap, as are most non-Renaultsport Clios (which he can't get insured on)]) let him buy his own - they are bling mobiles for the kids, nothing more.

Sorry to hijack the thread from the OP but I'd like to say
thanks to Rachman for your helpful reply to my post (above).
My fiesta is quite a high spec with a/c, alloys etc and has only 12k miles. What difference does that make to the price and will it make it more or less saleable in the private market?
What if I consider a little car for my 18 yr old (whose female btw) in addition to keeping my fiesta (for the time being). Do you have any recommendations in the small car market, small engine, cheap ins group for around 1500-2k?

Cowboy name, cowboy car - have you seen Brokeback Mountain and QAF - joke BTW :)

A mate had an old Patrol - in white - so you know what's coming next - black insulation tape and letters UN on the doors - he was NOT amused....

LR may have view, but low miles can help privately - it won't mean a trader will give you any more for it, but if it's a decent metallic and with aircon with £12K I would be trying to make sure it's spotless and try it up at £3850 with a view to taking £3500 and anything above is a result - I would also take £3400 if that's all that came out of it - but I like to know it's sold. It's the best Fiesta out there in the right spec and miles for that age and should sell reasonably easily if clean (and I mean clean) - trader will NOT give you more than book anyway - which is sod all on that.

Car for daughter, if you are buying privately and she wants small but not embarrassing looking, the basic Puntos are cheapest (1.1 is least insurance - they rattle a lot but don't break - but get three keys with it - 2 black and 1 red - I would not even buy one without that red key (google for why) - but basic is best on these, the Clio is fine in 1.2 form with no posh bits (don't buy a 1.1 - they are rubbish). Corsa is a mixed bag - mainly because so many have been ruined by teenage Kevins thrashing them - hard to finds a good one - same with Saxos and 106s.

If it were me paying less than a grand, I would be buying as late a model as possible Seat Ibiza 5 door in a metallic (it's a Polo really) with a 1.9 diesel engine and some history or a 1.0 Micra 16V with power steering (most do) and a sunroof (LX/GX trim). Or I would look for a good early 1.25 Fiesta as these are dropping to this level (S Plates) and check it carefully for signs of both chavving up and rust.

Petrol or diesel and is it p1ssing oil from the diff ? - presumably 2.0 petrol - if it's not rusty I would think it's a good buy if it's not white and not got silly wheels and bits from about £1150-1200 - depending on state of tyres....
  • green petrol 4 newish tyres we would have to put a tow bar on for wifes business is the diff a regular prob? and is it expensive to sort /?
  • [/I]Well done James.Iam sure Iam a deal older than you. But you did right move. I have peugeot exec.406td.leather, a/c,electric every thing.A dealer told me it is worth £1000. To buy a new electric wing mirror cost £350.So when you come to change your Clio, think what am I paying for. Previously I had only BMW and suffered all the time from Vandals. Spend your money on yourself not the Motor Trade . Allain
