Flatmate movements - consequences on E.O.N.

Hi all,

I am sharing a flat with 2 other friends. We split our bills, such that one of us will be responsible for electricity, one will be for water, one for telephone/internet.

One of my friends will be moving out soon, and will be replaced by a new tenant. Of course the account that we have with E.O.N. which is under my friend's name will have to be transferred to the new tenant.

1. Is the transferring of names easy/anything I need to watch for?

2. We managed to have a low monthly D.D. setup - £26/month. If the transfer is made, will E.O.N. still continue with that D.D.?

3. Will an exit fee (or withdrawing of discount) occur for our bill (under my friend's name)?

4. If we decide to change to a different version of E.O.N.'s product (v.14 as opposed to the current v.11) - does the answer in 3. remain?

Thank you!

    1. Yes, but it will be a new account, not just a change of name.
    2. If it covers your use, it may be similar. But a new first guess will be made.
    3. No, but you do lose the discounts since your last bill - an extra 14% or 18% on up to three months usage.
    4. No.

Phone them a few days before your friend moves out, give them meter readings and ask for an up to date statement. This way you should only miss out on a few days worth of discount ;)
  • Hey thanks so much for your replies.

    1. Will we be charged if we ask for an up-to-date statement before the statement date (ours is on ElectricityOnly v11 if that helps!)

    2. Now that there does not appear to be any benefits of staying on the same supplier, I think we will move to a slightly cheaper one (BG Websaver 3). Is it as simple as this - just go to the switching websites, enter our property details and new account name, then voila everything will be okay? (am I right EON and BG will authorize transfers base on property address and not account holder name?)

    Thanks!

I'd tell them to close the old account (as if you are all moving out), then open a new one (as if you are all moving in) - keeps it simple. Also means they shouldn't be able to charge you (although I dount they would)

And make sure you always give them accurate readings.

As to websaver 3 - it has an exit fee so remember to take that nto account if you are considering switching.
Switching is easy - just make sure the bilsl are up to date on the old name. I'd still tell Eon about the change even if you switch - it can take 8 weeks to swap over.

    Hi firsttimestudent

Already some good advice posted. Thought I would just confirm a couple of points.

Closing your flatmate's account and opening another in the name of the new tenant is definitely the best way to go.

Sounds like you are currently on the Electricity Online tariff (version 11). This is no longer available. Version 14 has replaced it and the unit prices/discounts may be different.

Monthly Direct Debits are worked out based on usage and prices. If either of these factors has changed significantly since the Direct Debit was first set up a new arrangement may need increasing/decreasing.

There are no exit fees for the Electricity Online products but discount is not given on the final statement. Stewie_griffin makes a good suggestion to offset the impact of this. There is no charge for this and the statement will be posted online.

Likewise, there is no charge for switching from version 11 to 14 of Electricity Online. :)

Switching suppliers is straightforward particularly through the various comparison websites. Provided there is no debt on the account E.ON will not object to the switch.

    Hope this helps. :)
