Wanna laptop

Options
Not sure this is the right place to put this but hoping someone can give me some advice.

I've got a Dell PC, Dimension 4600 or 4800 I think that I bought nearly 2 years ago at a cost of about 1k. I'm moving to somewhere much smaller and quite fancy a laptop, but not sure if it would be cost effective?

Does anyone know of somewhere that would do a kind of computer part exchange where I could trade in my PC against some of the cost of a laptop? Not even sure what the PC would be worth now or where would be the best place to sell it? Might I be better keeping hold of it as I can squeeze it in the new place if I really want to, just liked the idea of a laptop saving room....

    Welcome to the MSE site.

I'll move your thread over to the 'Techie Stuff' board, where it should get more views and responses.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Make sure you keep the hard drive or swap it with a cheap one before selling. Remember, it has all your personal data on it.
  • your PC has a very low residual value. You would be disappointed with the amount offered for the machine, trust me - especially with the price paid around a grand.

Potentially the best solution, should you want to try to sell it, is list the components for sale on somewhere like eBay. CPU is "normal" as is RAM, you might find someone paying a good price for a motherboard as they only fit in Dells and they cost an arm and a leg from Dell support.

You could also simply keep the PC and buy a laptop too.

FWIW I have an old Dell which is connected to my home entertainment system and projector. It's given it a new lease of life - a quasi-mediacenter PC :)
In the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result. Of those bitten, 70% are children... So the question has to be asked....... Has the time come to ban children?

  • What a pain, I might just try and squeeze it into the new place, it'll probably work out cheaper for me just we're going to be VERY tight for space so something without a huge subwoofer and 5 speakers was sounding like a good idea, but I thought I wouldn't be able to get back anywhere near what I paid for it :(
