I've just been doing a bit of 'fishing' around various recruitment sites and decided to give Fish4Jobs a go. What a complete and utter waste of time.
I was offered the opportunity to search for jobs by town so I selected Llandudno (which is on the North Wales coast if anyone from Fish4Jobs is reading this). The first half dozen or so 'jobs' were vague nationwide sales positions and IT training packages. Then came opportunities in Canada and Australia. Lots and lots of opportunites in Canada and Australia. In fact by the time I reached page 6 of the listings without finding one single job which was actually in Llandudno (as I'd specified) I gave up.
Now I can appreciate that there will be people looking to emigrate and they may be interested in these opportunities. However I'm just looking for a job in Llandudno or thereabouts. Canada and Australia are just a tad too far to commute to on a daily basis.
I can't help thinking that it would be better for Fish4Jobs to list the jobs in the specified location first, then show the ones overseas after. As far as I'm now concerned it's waste of time and effort even using their site and I won't be using it again.

The site is indeed useless, personally I wouldn't have gone past the 3rd page so well done for making it through 6 pages
.
At one point the site was ok but now there are too many companies advertising crap such as the Canada thing you mentioned. Maybe someone who works for them will spot this thread and take a gander, but don't hold your breath.0 -
On a slightly related note, the most popular volunteering 'job' search site, www.do-it.org is just as useless.
In contrast to fish4job this one is great at finding jobs in your local area but doesn't seem to recognise that jobs that were advertised 5 years ago might have been filled by now. If you want to search for jobs within a 20 mile radius be prepared to spend most of your time looking at job vacancies from 3 years ago.0 -
I noticed that, only I wasn't searching for Llandudno.
Unlike you I couldn't be bothered to read as far as 6 pages. I just assumed that there were no local jobs - though as I live in a major city I find that hold to believe. I think it is ridiculously stupid of fish4jobs to allow someone to search by location and then give then a load of jobs that are just not relevant. Like you I won't be using them again and I imagine most intelligent people will be of the same opinion.0 -
The government's job centre site isn't much better. Last time I used it, if it actually worked, I would search for part time jobs within 5 miles of my postcode in cambridge.
I ended up by page 2 looking at a LOT of adverts for jobs in germany of all places, with a few in birmingham. Oddly, I was sorting by closest distance, so how germany is closer than birmingham is beyond me.
It may be better by now, but I doubt it.0 -
Last year the Job Centre Plus website was no better - I live in Surrey and put in a search area of 20 miles from my post code and it chucked up jobs in the Wirral!Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free

Mortgage free since 2014

These sites sum up the myth that is 'T'internet'.
Fish4 advertises loads [for free since it's owned by local papers], and their site is pretty well known and is still sh17..
JCP is a gov website [in theory used by 2 million people [3 million by the end of next week and 5 million by the end of the year]]...and it's sh17
All the bollox about new ways of doing business is cr4p...most people with a web presence are wasting their time.
There, feel better for that.0 -
And then every other job site is plagued by agencies who advertise jobs that dont exist to get you onto their books, then try to get you to sign up to a totally irrelevant job.
I actually had more than one time where I saw a perfect job on my local job site, applied for it and got a call from an agency a few minutes later.
They wanted to take my details and know what sort of job I was after:
Me: The only job I'm after is the one I just saw you advertise on jobbywhatever.com.
Them: Oh that post has been filled.
me: Really? When?
Them: Oh erm, last week.
me: If you filled it last week, why did you list it again, today?
them: Uh, we have other full time admin jobs around the area.
Me: no, I'm specifically looking for a part time job in the city centre.
them: babble.....
me: *hangs up*0 -
Have to agree about recruitment agencies. Over the years I've registered with about a dozen ranging from the big players like Reed and Hays to the small local places. Over the last few months I've applied on-line for maybe twenty vacancies and only had one reply, and that was to say that they'd had responses from better qualified candidates. On the other hand I get calls from agancies asking if I'd be interested in positions which never seem to appear on their websites.
A couple of weeks ago I applied for a 'vacancy' on the website of one the big agencies and got no reply. About four or five days later I got a call from said agency saying that they hadn't heard from me for a while so they were wondering if I was still looking for a new job. The consultant who called was the same person who was supposedly responsible for the vacancy I'd just applied for!The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water

Jobsite.co.uk is just as bad - for example, I searched for jobs in the West Midlands, but it also gave me jobs that were in Dublin: why? Well, it turned out that the advertisers had put "West Midlands" as the location instead of "Dublin".
Now, afaik, jobsite.co.uk charges for adverts, and they don't check the details before they're published? What's that all about?0 -
Recruitment agencies with my CV on file are no better. I get sent emails asking if I am interested in work in Paris ... I presume this is because I did O level French in the 1970s, which is listed on my CV.0
