the dates depend on your uni term dates & the uni provides these details to SFE, they have already been fixed!0

Cool. I'll look out for that. Thanks again for the help.0

Life became compley a little while after I made my last post. Sadly the course I was scheduled to attend has been defered to next year and I have been offered another course instead. This one pays a Bursary for the first year, so I have notified SLC of the problem using a Change of Circumstances form, their own web based message system and a few phone calls.
So far I have heard nothing back from them, although they tell me that post opening is slow going at the moment. Guess it is their busy period.
Far as I can work out, using their own online calculator, I "could be" eligable for a Student Maintence grant of around 2,000 pounds, the fees and the main maintence payment is payed by the Bursary.
On the advice of the SLC, I filled out the "please pay me" form that I recieved with my Award Notice, even though that Award Notice is no longer valid or correct. According to SLC, this didn't matter as I was only saying "please pay me", rather than agreeing to be paid the now non-valid amount.
In the meantime, Works and Pensions have apparently been unable to find me on their computer using the NI I supplied. I have checked and this is correct, so I will have to deal with them once I get the offical letter from them (due this week).
Meanwhile, my actual question is this: What happens if SLC don't get their act together and end up paying me the Student Loan payment based on the old circumstances? And is that likely to happen?
Either way, if I do actually get a payment from them, whatever the amount it will be, it is likely to turn up very late inside the first term.
I will update this thread to help anyone else in the same position.0 -
If they pay you based on the old amounts, keep it and wait til they contact you i.e. stick it into a different account in a different bank. This is so you can repay it.
SFE is also at it's busiest now, there's a minimum turnover of 6 weeks, so, you won't really hear until before the beginning of term if you've just sent it off, or before dependant on when you sent it.** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

The funding you are quoting here is a little confusing and doesn't quite sound correct. What course will you be doing?Meanwhile, my actual question is this: What happens if SLC don't get their act together and end up paying me the Student Loan payment based on the old circumstances? I'll be on a Certificate of Higher Education course, leading eventually to a 2 further years and hopefully a degree. The course is funded by a Bursary on around 1,300 per term (+plus course fees).
Far as I know, I can also apply for a means tested grant from the SLC which would be a maximum of 2,900, but it would be affected (I think) by the amount of bursary I receive.
Does that help at all? Or do you need more details?0 -
I do not know if you will have the same dates but my payment schedule for this year is as following:
21/09/2009 (£969 [standard grant] + £1103.84 [standard loan])
11/01/2010 (£969 [standard grant] + £1103.84 [standard loan])
19/04/2010 (£968 [standard grant] + £1138.32 [standard loan])
Since you receive the full standard (maintenance) grant you will also receive a bursary from your university too, though, the amount will depend on them; they are required to offer a minimum amount. I receive two £500 payments (in February and May) as long as I am still registered on the course.0 -
I receive a bursary from the Uni (from the Skills council I beleive, but I could be wrong), and this is scheduled at about 1,300 per term. I have been told that I can also apply for a Grant from the SLC, but while the bursary was easy to sort out, the change of circumstances seems to have thrown SLC into a loop and now I don't know if it will get sorted out anytime soon...
Watch this space. I will update for future students to be aware of what's happening.
To be honest, the people I feel sorry for are kids who are moving away from home, possibly for the first time, possibly into an alien enviroment and seperated from their friends and family, and on top of that they face the problem of possibly having no money because SLC takes about 12 weeks to open a letter.
Something wrong here!0 -

I was (and still am) one of those kids, and it is not that bad. Universities are sympathetic, and student bank accounts are there to be used.Once you are in the system it is fairly easy to get things sorted from there, though, I would advise sticking to online applications if you can.
