Due to cancel holiday - (please ignore)

Hi
I have paid a £400 deposit for a holiday for 4 (2 adults, 1 child, 1 infant) but I am unable to afford the balance which is due at the end of this month £2k.
I have been in touch with first choice who have been good to me, pricing up alternatives (ie same place, one week, or self catering etc) but it is no good, it has now come down to me either biting the bullet (credit card) or cancelling.....
Or has it? I was just thinking, what if I pay the £60 change charge and swap to the cheapest possible, shortest last minute holiday with awful flight times and try to save a couple of hundred quid? Anyone know why this might not work before I give it a go? I am allowed to change destination/dates (not sure about number of passengers) as long as i chose another first choice holiday.
Anyone ever done this? Am I wasting my time?!
<edit> Just had a look online, cheapest last min deals are £119 per adult, even then it comes to over £300 for the two of us, plus the £60 booking fee its a waste of time.</edit>

How about changing the dates for as far away as you can (ie like this time next year) & it gives you more time to save up. I know you miss out on your holiday now, but it means you don't lose your deposit. You can also change to a cheaper option (like SC) at the same time.0
