Some of the top brands (Linn, Naim, Meridian) are doing WAF (wife acceptance factor) oriented systems these days.
Alternatively you could try a computer (eg. a Mac Mini) with an external DAC (digital to analogue converter) to plug into a source. The advantage of this is that you can also plug it into your telly and watch movies and even surf the Internet. DACs can be had cheap (I bought a decent one at a car boot for 50p last week), and go up to £1000s
If a system doesn't have a dedicated phono input but has other inputs then it can be connected to a record deck via a phono stage. As with DACs, phono stages can be had cheap (I got one for nothing via freecuycle a while back) up to £1000s.

Realistically it's hard to put a figure on it, as we have a baby coming in 2 weeks, so it seems a bit silly to go off and spend a load on stuff we really don't need.
I don't want to put a figure on it, because it depends what you get for your money. It's no good me saying I have £500 to spend on separates and then them being no good for that price,

I think I'm going to try to go the secondhand route and see what I can get. Another option is to leave my separates inside and get a load of cheap 2ndhand stuff outside. In fact I've remembered I have an old 1970's Yamaha tuner amp somewhere and a pair of speakers, so all I need is a cheap CD player and deck to get a decent sounding, but doesn't matter if it gets dirty, system for the workshop.

Still doesn't get me DAB radio though, nothing seems to work for everything without me spending lots of money :D
I know I can't always have everything, doesn't stop me from wanting it though :)

Babies cry a lot so you need something powerful to drown out the noise or something decent for when you spend all your time in your workshop lol

    Ahh true :rotfl:

Thinking along those lines, just how often am I going to be able to actually play the damn thing inside at anything above a whisper anyway? Either the babies awake, or it's asleep, how often is it not going to be here when I am. This needs some serious thought.

Maybe I am better just moving it all out and getting a DAB for inside.... and a portable one, so I can stick it out in the workshop if I want to.

You have all been a great help, thanks :D

Thinking one step further, if I get a CD/DAB system, I can listen to CD's inside as well and the kids can listen to their horrible CD's as well.
So I need a decentish CD/DAB thing? If that's possible. I feel like I am getting somewhere at last!

Arcam Solo mini and Pro-Ject turntable with line-level outputs, Monitor Audio RS1 speakers. All with good WAF.

If you love your system then keep it where it is. If she loves YOU then she should accept that its one of 'lifes luxuries' to you and she shouldnt be getting in the way of what you feel is something that makes YOU happy
Could you not put the entire seperates units inside of some sort of glass casing or suchlike, bed the speaker cables into the walls and just have the speakers showing with the grills off (Presumably connected to the wall)?
I love my system and if anyone told me its going then id simply tell them back it most certainly is NOT
