Broadband Availability

I don't know if this is the correct place to post this however I have a question about broadband availability.

I am in the process of moving to a new house in Cornwall, it is situated in the middle of nowhere but I have been told that it has a BT phoneline. Am I right in thinking that because a BT phone line is in place I should be able to get broadband in the area. This is fairly crucial as I will need the broadband to be able to work from home.

Thanks

Put the area code into samknows.com, that will tell you what exchange it is on and what the LLU options are, if any (though in rural Cornwall it's unlikely that the exchange is unbundled, so you'll be stuck with a BT Wholesale service).
You'll almost certainly be able to get broadband, but the speed you will get will be dependent on distance from the exchange.
To get an estimate of linespeed you need to know the phone number.
PS: you would get a better response to this if you posted it in the internet access forum.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

If the locals down there know you are trying to get Internet, you will be burned at the stake!!

If you do obtain it, try not to let any locals see you on the keyboard, they may see you only have 10 fingers unlike the 12 they have.

I'm afraid you can't assume that at all. I live in the middle of the Peak Park but can't get broadband, there are lots of areas around the country, and even individual properties in a broadband-enabled area, which can't get it. Like so many others I'm stuck with dialup for the foreseeable future, no hope in sight. The broadband checker will help with some info, though it's more effective with a phone number as postcodes can cover quite a large number of properties.

You may find you will do better with mobile broadband. Have you tried your mobile phone at your new house? I can get around 4 bars 2G and that's better than dialup through a phone line, (and doesn't engage the phone) though if you can get Edge that's masses better. 3G is unlikely but worth checking.

Life in the country is wonderful in some respects but a nightmare in terms of services and esp comms!

Can I just say that this is not necessarily the case.
For years, having a BT line but no broadband I kept being told 'it's coming'.
In the end in utter irritation and annoyance I slowly pushed for a more and more senior manager in BT until eventually I was speaking to a guy who
    a) actually cared and
    b) actually knew what he was talking about.
    Outcome?
In spite of being told by a whole host of other BT bods including an engineer who 'visited' that I couldn't receive broadband where I live as it was too far from the exchange, I in fact now HAVE broadband, it has been very reliable indeed (up to the last few days) and it is literally costing me 1p per month more than my dial up costed me on limited access!
So don't be fobbed off, climb the ladder of responsibility and you might just find you can get the service you want.:T
    Good luck.

That's brilliant! I'd be interested to know what you said and to whom. I had also climbed the ladder of various bits of BT as well as my ISP, as well as stopping engineers in the road as well as lobbying the local authority and my MP. So far no good. It's all to do with line length to the house. My son works for BT too and he couldn't give me any better news. A real major enormous pain!!

I hope it helps the original poster though. Thanks
