I can't really offer impartial advice but I've always been an AMD person.

They tend to be slightly cheaper than there Intel counterparts and the AMD 64's run very cool are vastly overclockable even on standard cooling.

I've got a AMD 64 3000 Venice (939 Socket) overclocked by over 30% and it's running cool and completely stable on an ASRock Dual motherboard (which isn't a fancy or expensive one by any means)

  • I must admit too that I'm an AMD man.

I've been using them for nearly 10 years, not the same PC...........lol

I build them and always uee them, I have just bought a laptop with the AMD 3400 64 bit and is the nuts so to speak.

I'm currently an AMD user too. I switched this time last year and haven't looked back.

Reasons I'd go for an Athlon64 over an Intel equivalent are:
    - Cheaper, not by much but still cheaper.
    - Use much less power, in fact I've seen tests where an Athlon at full load uses only a little more power than a Prescott that's idling.
    - Run much cooler. My brother's Prescott runs at around 45-55C, whereas my Athlon is 30-40C.
    - Generally faster. Apart from maybe Video Encoding, Athlon's are generally better, especially for gaming.
    - You can run 64-bit software/operating systems. Not a big deal just yet, but at least the option is there. I've got 64-bit Fedora Core 5 which runs very smoothly.

AMD definitely got it right with the Athlon64. Any builds I do for myself/friends at the moment use an Athlon64.

We have several pcs are home, two intel celerons (new type 533 bus) and a Pentium 4 Northwood. I will be upgrading in the Summer to a AMD 64 dual core as I have read there better value and run much cooler and better for gaming, than the equialent Pentium.

It doesn't really matter which one you have ... just get the the best one in your budget .. always remember that you are the slowest peripheral.

For a mid range system that will be used for gaming, AMD tends to be the best for the reasons mentioned above.
If you have money to burn then the future of intel looks quite promising, but at the moment AMD is the best bet in my opinion.

Wow, this PC-must-be-quiet-maniac is convinced.Which makes of PC desktops and laptops have AMD dual core processors? I can only find a few desktops with them?
Laptops can only find non dual core with AMD like Fujitsu Siemens.
Would prefer dual core although the prices of non dual core are dropping at Comet for eg.
Btw Intel rep told me to avoid Acer!! Muchas problemas.

    another thread, another question.....sorry :D

Just had to add another vote for AMD!!!

Was going to go for an Intel chip towards the end of last year, but every review or benchmark I saw showed how great the AMDs are.
