Littlewoods Default Charge Their Computer Problems

We paid our bill 5 days before it was due to littlewoods. We were told the payment went through. Then 14 days later we have received a letter to say the payment didn't go through. We phoned to see what the problem was and they said they had computer problems the day we paid and no payments went through. So we made the payment again. Then today we had a letter to say we were being charged £12 for defaulting in our payment.
My husband phoned and told them what has happened and they said it's our problem because we should have paid on time even though the last conversation were they admitted liability was noted on the system. They say we have to pay up!
Surely they can't do this.

did your husband tell them that you tried to pay? either way you need to call them back and make them aware of the situation esp. when this will affect your credit rating0

I didn't realize it would affect iur credit rating that is worse that the fee they want us to pay. We did say on the phone it was their problem and they did admit it in one call but the second call they said we still had to pay.0
