    Just discovered this interesting thread.

Can't say I've really got a fashion icon, I'm sure that those who read my daily fashionista posts know I'm pretty whacky and weird in style but I do love the following ladies' dress sense. I suppose I just love rock chicks.......

    1. Helen, Bollywood star of the 1950's and 1960's. Helen was an exotic mix of Burmese, French and Spanish and played the vamp in films no nice Hindi girl could. She's my avatar.
    Watch her here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bua_QY1awj8

    2. Debbie Harry. I grew up in awe of the Blondie frontswoman. No stylist needed and those catsuits and leopard print still rock!

    3. Chrissie Hynde. Another rock chick with style and attitude.

    4. Bianca Jagger. Gorgeous, exotic and chic.
  • Fearne Cotton and Katie White from Ting Tings are probably the main ones for me - the slightly indie girl thing. Although they have really different body shapes to me so it's more taking elements of their look (say coloured skinny jeans) and then adapting it to suit me (so in that case I'd look for a pair of coloured jeans in a style that suits my body shape).

I agree with so many of the stylish women already mentioned, I thought you might find my story a little bit interesting even if it does lower the tone somewhat:rotfl:

about 5 or 6 years ago I looked very different to how I do now, I was still reasonable looking but I was about 2.5 stone heavier and starting to look well, a touch frumpy but I must stress I wasn't unhappy with myself just kind of accepting to the fact that my best years (looks wise anyway)were behind me then we got sky tv, well I watched so much rubbish telly (I love it) I eventually found the playboy channel (no sniggering please) I watched the rubbish programmes that come on before the real stuff and the other reality rubbish on other channels (girls next door etc) and saw that you don't have to be skinny or even that pretty to look good, its all about confidence and lets be honest, being good with make up etc. From that point on I revamped myself, dropped to a size 8, slapped on the fake tan, grew my hair and got extensions, got my teeth done and changed the way I dress to be more trendy and I have never looked back. The changes effected my whole life in a positive way, my point is that I always liked the done up look but didn't feel confident enough to pull it off, now I do and my life is much better because I am happier with myself and it really shows. Just in case any of you think I walk about with my b**** out etc I don't, its a toned down version, its me but better but I do put that extra effort in.

So for me its the playboy girls that influenced me and gave me inspiration not so much how they dress (I know lots of it is fake) but more their attitude and the practical things like make up and hair and they kind of gave me permission to try to look pretty without being embarrassed about it, we don't all have it naturally but its ok to have a helping hand:D

I really hope this make sense, sorry its long I'm in a chatty mood;)
Thank you for this site Martin

    Good luck for the future
  • Glowgirl i LOVE that story, just a few questions..... how did you loose weight??? and how did you get teeth done and how much does it all cost to maintain it????

I vowed a few years ago that the fact i was a couple of stone overweight affect my life and how i feel about myself. Cue the afformentioned capsule, it was like i was giving myself permission to look good and it felt very liberating let me tell you, i used to struggle with compliments and would not wear anything that i thought someone would say that i looked nice in. Crazy, coupled with the fact that i spent from the age of 18 through to 26 being pregnant/breastfeeding i honestly didn't see the point.

How different is my attitude now!! I need to drop a dress size admittedly, but i will not wear anything that doesn't make me look the best i can. I have my hair cut and coloured every 5 weeks, i give myself regular facials and never leave the house without make-up and the once over in the mirror. I regulary get compliments to which i reply 'thank you'. I think i look younger now than i did 10 years ago, it's amazing what wisdom can bring you!!!

My plans for the very near future are:

    1) Botox
    2)teeth whitened
    3)eyebrows semi-permanent make-up
4)Hermes (or even a good replica) handbag

How self obssessed does that sound????:)

Sharron, I had semi-permanent eyebrows done (and topped up) a couple of years ago. Best thing ever!

Good for you two, glowgirl and sharron! I always want to look my best - not to impress people or to prove a point, just because looking scruffy/tired/frumpy makes me unhappy! I'm always fully made up (but natural), I wear casual clothes but always make an effort to look good and put together, and my hair is always, ALWAYS blow dried and straightened. I have no problems whatsoever if someone wants to go out sans makeup and in their scruffiest outfit - their life, their choice. It doesn't take me long to get ready to my acceptable standard so why not? It makes me happy so I'll keep doing it. :)

Yes I definitely want to come back as a French woman:D

I remember reading a qote by a noted French man many years ago. I so wish I remember who it was, as it spoke a very basic truth about French looks, and why they kept the emphasis on style and clothes. The French are not in any way good looking in general. But they can dress, and exude class through what they wear. You forget the face and look at the body, slim and well dressed.

If you have been to France as many times as I have, and I have French relatives living in Paris, you would be hard pressed to find as many good looking people as here in the UK. It's all in the quality of clothes, time spent on detail, ie skin care etc, and being confident. Enjoy food, but eat very little.

And I think Carla Bruni is a good choice and how I aim to dress, but on a budget, but I also have a major part of Italian in me! ;)

goanmad how much did u pay for your eyebrows???? i have done a bit of research an i expect to pay around £170.

geenie, yes definetly on a budjet!! but really do love her confidence.

Grammer girl, yes making an effort does make you feel good, sometimes i want to scream that from the roof tops, in a trinny/sussannah type way..........i hate it when you hear women whine on that ' it doesn't matter what i do i look/fat/frumpy/stupid' . My motto is no matter how u look you should make the best of what you have got, exactly what the french do!!!!!!!!!!!

*sharron steps down of her soap box*
