New Imac

Hi - I recently purchased an Imac after years of PC, and I am gradually finding my way around it. The only question I have so far is there any way to hide the taskbar at the bottom of the screen when you have a program open. Thanks

It's call the Dock not taskbar and if you go into the system preferences (or Apple menu [top right] "Dock") you can choose what you'd like to do with the dock, auto-hide, move to left/right, change size, magnification etc.

Go Apple Menu>Dock>Turn Hiding On (or change Dock Preferences).
In OSX it's called the Dock, not the taskbar.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It's probably more useful to move the dock to the right-hand side of the screen and adjust it's size rather than using auto-hide. Full screen applications will hide the dock themselves when appropriate.

Right click (or ctrl-left click) the dock separator (the broken line), and you'll be able to adjust how the dock works:

Life became a lot easier once I discovered it was called the dock, also switching on right click on the mouse has been great. I'm sure this has been asked before but a quick read of the apple forums suggests that most mac users do not feel the need for anti virus programmes. Is this ok?

Mac..urh... :D I'm only forced to use it at work but (not that I'm insulting anyone) I really hate it when people seem to buy Macs just because they look shiny then end up being really frustrated by it. Not that i'm saying the OP is one like that!

    What a pointless post.

To paraphrase you: I really hate it when people post something totally irrelevant to a thread, to stir up an argument.

It's been well discussed on this forum, worth a search and read. If you don't visit any dodgy websites, don't use pirated software then you are 99.9% safe.

However if you exchange files with PC users (Office files for example) these can be infected with PC viruses, which have no effect on your Mac, but you could then unwittingly pass on these infections to other PC users.

If you are concerned install the free ClamXav virus checker.

I really hate it when people buy PCs because they're cheap, then end up being frustrated by them.

    I'd say we're even.
