getting rid of our old car

we're looking to replace our 1995 fiesta with something newer (with mod cons such as working windows, remote central locking etc :D).

although it is over 10 years old we don't really want to spend the money that would be required for us to take advantage of the £2k car scrappage scheme.

it runs, and starts first time every time, with an MOT until September. However, it's nothing pretty to look it. for one, it's an old boxy fiesta  :D but it also has some cosmetic issues (small dents and scratches). on this basis i doubt any dealer would be interested in offering us a part ex

would we be likely to have any joy trying to sell it for a reasonable price (£200 would be a miracle :D) or would we be wasting our time? whilst the cosmetic damage doesnt affect the function or safety of the car i dont know if people would be able to see past them.

would we be better off just scrapping it?

(purchase of new car is not dependent on sale of old car but we don't want to be paying tax and insurance on two vehicles so would want it gone sharpish whichever avenue we took).

any advice/thoughts would be fab

I switched cars two years ago, a bought a 05 fiesta from a ford agent, they took my old escort that did'nt have any Mot. the figure they gave me, at least on paper was £500. so got the new one for £5k plus old car.

Do you live near a sixth form college? young people (particularly boys) are always after project cars and cheap runners (as insurance is so high for them in the first year).
my advise put sum ads in the local supermarkets - put a photo on there and just put £200 ono. u will def get some interest particularly with a long MOT!

Minor cosmetic damage can often be tarted up for very little cost. Get the right colour spray paint from Halfords or any other motor spares shop, a few sheets of wet&dry paper, a small pack of epoxy filler and some masking tape. Then with a bit of patience you should be able to make a reasonable job of it yourself. The materials are cheap - probably no more than £10 - £15 or so, and if you take your time you can make the car look a lot better. It's not going to be a professional finish, but you should be able to make it look a lot more attractive, which will help it to sell.

By the way, such "tarting-up" will not influence the price a dealer will pay you, but if you sell it privately it may make the difference between a quick sale and having it hanging around for ages.

You could also look at the option of putting into auction - which is all a dealer would do. You'll stand a pretty good chance of getting rid of it, but you take pot luck on the price. If there are several people interested then you could get a pretty good price for it. It's a bit of a gamble, but an easy way to get rid.

I have just sold a relatives (honest, it was my cousins) 1996 Rover 214 for £160. It had failed the MOT and had about 6 weeks tax left on it, we put a sign in the windscreen.
£195ono Spares or Repair and it sold within a couple of hours.
Don't forget for people who haven't got much money, the scrappage scheme will be making it harder to get hold of cheap doer uppers. Don't send it to Auction, by the time you have paid your entry fee and commission you will probably owe them money!
Also if you sell your car yourself and then go to a dealer, you should get a discount for no p/x.
