raising money for home improvements

Has anyone got any advice on raising money for home improvements? I am very fortunate in that I have four properties, the one I live in and two others are owned outright and I have a small mortgage on the other one. The problem is that I would like to improve the home I am in and need to raise approximately £40,000 to cover the cost.

Any suggestions? what's the general opinion on equity release? I would appreciate your thoughts.

    Do you want to repost the question on the loans part of the forum since this is reclaiming bank charges/credit card charges.
