where's best for good quality school trousers? and name labels?

My son is just finishing reception and i've lost count of the amount of school trousers he's been through this year!!
His first two pairs (M&S cheap range) both had holes in the knees within the first 2 weeks!
He's had a pair from Mothercare which ended up with a hole in the crotch after a couple of months!
And he's had countless pairs from various places (Woolies, Tesco, BHS etc) which haven't lasted long.
The ones that lasted the longest were from Sainsbury's but even they got really worn around the knees and looked like they had big white-ish patches on the knees, quicker than I felt they should.
How long do school trousers last in your house? And does anyone know of any miraculous schoolwear shop I can get some from?

Also, where do you get your name labels from? They all seem so expensive and I don't know if they are any good or not!

cant answer the trousers question as my eldest doesnt start nursery till sept but been looking for name tags and there is loads on ebay which seem like good prices they have sew,iron and stick on ones and do mix and match

Hi I buy my sons trousers from sainsburys.
Like you my son wears the knees out, but I have found that sainsburys ones last the longest efore this happens and as they are a reasonable price compared to some places I dont mide paying for more part way through the year.
Well I dont have much choice because he creates holes in the knees but I havnt found any trousers where this doesnt happen!

Name labels - I get mine off ebay. I buy sewn in and sticker ones (seperatly as it works out you get more for money) they are excellent and delivered within a few days.

I get my name labels from ebay - i buy 25 for about £2 inc P&P and there the iron on one's, so easy to iron on and they never ever come off - believe me we tried to take them out and couldnt. Mainly to stop some parents raiding the lost property box and taking home someone elses jumper and removing the sew in ones. Yes it has happened.

I only buy trousers from george at £4 a pair at that price i dont expect them to last long but they usually do, and my DS is going through a phase of spending most of his time on his knees. We usually have to buy new ones as he's grown out of them rather than he's put holes in them.

Main problem we have is shoes. We have had them from next at £28 a pair they lasted 2 weeks before they were completely ruined and falling apart. I've had cheap ones for £10 a pair and again they only lasted a few weeks. My DS has had about 14 pairs of shoes for school in a year.

I am seriously struggling to find school shoes that are trendy but cut the mustard of a boystrous 6 year old.

I always buy my son's school shoes from Clarks and I've only ever had to buy one pair for the whole year (luckily his feet haven't grown rapidly). My daughter has wide feet and her shoes were Startrite and still look fine after a whole year, although they scuffed really badly really easily so I had to regularly use that scuff paint stuff to dye them (it's from Clarks, I forget what it's called). Both brands are really expensive (£38 a pair, if I remember right) but have been worth it in the long run.

Try Adams on line - they usually have some sort of deal on, and arnt that much more expensive then the supermarket ones, but much better quality.

Shoes - I allways get these from Hush Puppies. They are cheeper than clarks and I find they last longer.
Plus I allways find there is huge ques for shoes at clarks in the school holidays but my local hush puppies store offer a time slot so you can book one and know your going to get seen around that time or you can pop in an join the normal que.

The local one to me also offers you a discount if they cant provide you with a choice of three styles in your childs size excellent concidering sometimes clarks struggle to provide 1 pair in my sons size sometimes!

However the hush puppies by me is an outlet one.

Trousers are 2 for £5 in sainsburys.

My DS is Year 1 going to Year 2 in Sept - School trousers I now only buy M&S premium range (wait till they have 3 for 2 offer on - think it's now)
I found that all others didn't wash as well and also hems came down! :mad:

I've given up on the name labels as they keep falling off (must be my sewing )
I just use permanent marker (there are only 3 letters in my son's name so easy enough)

Shoes I buy him Clarks (usually in the sale) and they last him.

My DD however goes through shoes like nobody's business and her last two pairs have been a brand called Norvic which are very good (they make boys shoes too)
Look on Amazon as I got these reduced and they also do Hush Puppies, Start-rite, Umi etc at pretty good prices

I vote for Adams school trousers too. The hems do come down sometimes but I can manage to stitch them back up so its not too much of a problem. My son is about to start year 3 and has always had Adams adjustable waist ones. If you like them they always have a sale after Christmas so I stocked up for September!

Marks and spencers for school trousers,I repeat what above poster wrote, go for more expensive range on 3 for 2 deal. My son is 8 and if a child is going to go though the knee,they will go through the knee on most makes,expecially when they start playing rugby,and british bulldogs at break time! I stick with M&S as they dont go shiny, wear thin,go bobbly or static, and dont lose thier shape. they are also most realistic on childs sizes.


I have sewn name labels on, in the past, but have a label pen now, I do have 3 kids tho!


My son has geox school shoes, they are the only ones that look half decent at the end of a school term on his feet, he does get to grow out of them, rather than them fall apart!

I buy DS's trousers from George at Asda. He outgrows them before they wear out, so they must be doing something right
