option 4, buy another standard pc case and transfer everything over.
cost £30 including the PSU if already fitted. usually they would have a 450watt psu.
motherboard should be a MATX or ATX, my nephew had a DELL once, and we transfered everything into another pc case.
You wouldnt need to reinstall anything. remember to move the case fans as well as you'd only get the rear fan. depending on case model.

Andy2004 the GX optiplex range is the business class range - meaning its dells own motherboard with one screw holding the board which slots in. I'm under the impression that the PSU either has a different number of pins, or a different fitting and the power connector . It is ages since i've fiddles with these.

it also all the usb port are 1.1

I'm busy working on very simliarly now and mine totally locks ever hour or so - some h/w issue where the only thing that works is the off button.
Thir precision range one was bespoke too, the inspiron range was any old MB in a dell box

    Hi

Is my noise problem from the PSU something on the way out?..

If it is, I may opt for another gx260 from ebay rather than re-building etc. They are a very popular computer - Ive seen them in surgeries, libraries - all over .. so there must be plenty of 2nd/3rd hand ones.

Some of them have 'genuine Win XP' which mine didnt appear to have as was constantly getting messages popping up telling me.
