are you private or council if council they can sometimes give you a diary to fill in with times and dates of the noise that way they have evidence to take to them

    It's privately rented.

...and the music just stopped. Thank god. Probably won't last, but for now i'm happy.

Sorry to 'revive' this again. The music started again this afternoon (it has been going for a few days, but I tried to ignore it) and has been on and off ever since. It's so loud I am really surprised no one else has said anything (maybe they have) as they have their windows open and you can hear it in the street.

I'm going to put a note in their mailbox and see what happens. Does anyone have any idea how to word it? I don't want to come across as too ar*ey but it is becoming a bit of a joke now. I was going to just leave it as anonymous as they'll probably figure out it's someone in the building anyway by me knowing which flat it is, but I don't really want them to know it's me (if my rambling makes any sense).

    Thanks for any help (again)

If it's going on now (and certainly after 11pm) then ring your council's environmental health dept and see if they have an out of hours service - I think most of them do at weekends. Or you could try the police - I know neighbours at the back of us were visited by the boys in blue on a couple of occasions - never had a peep out of them since! Although on a Friday night it's not so likely they would attend , but might be worth a try.

I wouldn't bother with the note - it might stir up trouble, especially if as you say, they could well work out who sent it. If you get the officials in to deal with the problem, they will keep your details anonymous, if requested.

    Hi there

I have great sympathy for your plight. I too suffered horrendous noise a couple of years ago. Every damned night boom boom boom! I was tormented. I hate Chris Rea to this day (Road to Hell indeed) I think anonymous is certainly the best way. I only suggest this because if, say, you did go to their door and ask nicely and they refused, ignore or be nasty to you, what do you do then? Take it to officialdom obviously and then they'd KNOW it was you.

Most of us just want a quiet life, go to work and put one foot in front of the other. Why do some people think it's acceptable to inflict their noise on others. It maddens me (can you tell? :o)

personally, i'd try a quick word first. it could be they have no idea how the sound travels or they just could be selfish and not care! either way, speaking to them should be the first step before leaving notes/contacting landlords. i'm not saying that these options won't be needed in the future but it may all be avoided with a chat... often the best way to get considerate neighbours is just to know them a bit!

we've had major trouble with sound upstairs from a flat and have now had to resort to the management agents to deal with it, but i think our problem is due to a guy being an alcoholic and not having any sense of what he's doing at 4am!! dealing with him drunk is difficult and so letters when sober have been needed... but this is a last resort; we did go up and ask him ot turn the music down first (well, on more than one occasion or it wouldn't have escalated!).

We had this in an old converted flat we used to live in the young girl in question didnt actually have the music up that loud it was the bass that was causing the problem. We had a quiet word explaining and actual got her to come in to our flat to hear it she was horrified as it sounded like we lived over a disco. Solution to the problem was she turned off the bass we couldnt no longer hear it and she could actually enjoy her music. On a funnier side we also had to ask her to move her bed away from the chimney i will leave that one to your imaginations ;-) x

Why do people subject others to their loud music? In this day and age there are walkmans, Ipods etc and you just plug your earphones in. A lot of the time these people know they are making noise and really just do not care.

True, and in some cases people don't realise the nuisance they're causing, especially in summer-time when everyone has their windows open.

Even though the racket may be annoying I'd say that up until 11pm there's not a lot you can do except go round and explain just how loud it is for you. Even the local authority will be reluctant to step in if it's not constantly going on after midnight. Do not be tempted to leave notes, it's horribly passive-aggressive and will most likely not get you the result you want. Face-to-face is the only reasonable way to deal with this in the first instance, in my opinion.

They may not be aware just how loud it is so I would just knock on the door be really polite and just say that its really loud in your flat, perhaps just make a joke about how rubbish the soundproofing is in the flats and that might be all that is needed. had exactly the same problem and just saying that is all it took and I didn't have a problem again.
