There is a beautiful reclaimed cast iron victorian fireplace available, how easy and expensive is it to get them fully restored and fully functionable. i.e., gas fire?

it depends on it's condition
If it's totally sound then you'd strip it if it's painted - £40? And then repaint it in fireprrof paint or oil it with goose fat!
It costs us about £300 to connect up a fire and you'd need the gas insert which I'm guessing from previous is about £150 -200? That's if your gas is already in place.
If your chimney is working it would be cheaper (and prettier) to have a real fire.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Thanks, not too bad although 300quid seems alot to get it connected, would be worth it though and at a combined cost of 665quid, costs just as much as a new fire but obviously alot nicer!0

Yes, I agree it would look nicer. I've just stripped back the bedroom fireplace here and it looks stunning without all those layers of paint blurring out all the lovely detail.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
