    Not much help to you but just to mention if the bank didn't show the cheque until cleared then they would have a silly amount of enquiries a little something like "I paid a cheque in yesterday but it's not showing on my account......" this is why it shows when it isn't cleared.

    In that case then try the refund as Gesture of Goodwill on the basis that it was the first time in x years you have banked with them and you made an error in calculating when the cheque would clear(thanks willo for the helpful tip ;) ).
