I have a P5N-E SLI ASUS motherboard and have just discovered that it has an external SATA port. Does this mean I can just connect/plug in (while the computer is of of course) a SATA hard drive and boot from that using the boot menu. If so that will solve my grandson problem:j.

I can just feed the power cable through a hole on the back of my computer.

Provided the BIOS supports the option to boot from the external drive - yes that should work.

Be aware that an external SATA port usually has a different plug than the internal type (with shielding IIRC) so you may need to buy a cable specifically for that.

eSATA ports are supposed to be used with drives in external enclosures with their own power supply. The sockets are different shapes too, so you'll need a different cable.
