How can I change @googlemail.com to @gmail.com

Options
I use Windows Live Mail with gmail but whenever I send an email it shows my email address as @googlemail.com.

When I give my address out I do so as @gmail.com

This has caused problems as sometimes if I'm listed in someone's address book as @gmail.com and the from address is @googlemail.com it sends my message to the Junk folder.

Gmail say that for UK users it says googlemail because of a trademark dispute but how can I configure Windows Live Mail to say gmail.com instead of googlemail.com? I went into accounts and my email address there is listed as gmail but when it is sent, gmail's servers must change it to googlemail.com.

Alternatively, has anyone got theirs changed to a gmail.com domain, or any other ideas for solving this?
Thanks :)

Best idea is to stop giving your email address out as @gmail.com

You won't be able to change the outgoing address to @gmail.com if you signed up to a @googlemail.com address
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

That's rubbish, back to hotmail for me then! I've actually tried giving the email as googlemail but most people tend to abbreviate it to gmail anyway. I may look into getting a domain name for email purposes... that's something that's crossed my mind too.

At least hotmail have an efficient and helpful support system, unlike Google where you have to read the help file and if it isn't relevant they pretty much tell you to get stuffed.

Basically, the reason you can't have a @gmail.com e-mail address is that another company provides a similar service with a near-identical name. If you live in Europe, you're stuck with the rather less wieldy @googlemail.com instead.

The cheek of starting a mail service AFTER Google had announced their plans for Gmail then indicating it was his trademark all along as well as turning down a quarter of a million dollar settlement from Google, indicates this is a frustrated, sad little man with nothing better to do with his life.

I don't quite see why the german dispute affects us in the UK though.

    100% fact.
Gmail was a registered email service for a number of years before google announced theirs. Google quite rightly lost the court battle to try and force him to give up the name.

As stated on the information site:

A Gmail (Google Mail) email address is also served as login name for Google Account. And both gmail domains is interchangeable, where any email sent to both username@gmail.com or username@googlemail.com will get delivered to same account’s inbox. So although signed up as @GoogleMail.com account, the mailbox can also receive any mail sent to @Gmail.com with same alias.

I have both Gmail and Googlemail accounts, but always give out the email address as Gmail.com. It does not differentiate between the two and it works perfectly fine for me.
If you have a friend/relative in America get them to sign up for you. Or use an anonymiser.

Does Windows Live not have use of any filters (like Gmail's )?
  • Does anyone know how to contact Google? A general webform or something?

I can only find forms after going through troubleshooting and it is specific to the problem in the troubleshooting article.
