I was nearly caught out by a free 1 month trial by Ocado. I signed up to get free delivery for a month. I assumed that I could cancel at any time after the trial ended but once the month was up you are committed to a 12 month contract.

Luckily I cancelled the day before but it has made me realise that it is important to read those terms and conditions.

I signed up to the free notepad offer that was supposdly an international company based in Belgium, but someone later found out that it's a small company based in Germany.

I've been receiving loads of personally addressed SPAM since signing up for that offer.

Just keep marking it as spam until your email learns (quickest on gmail), and don't reply to any of it. And don't open any email that's not obviously from people or companies you want contact with.

Spam can be annoying but it's no big deal. Just ignore it.

Always worth having 2 email addresses, one for real people and one for when you sign up to random freebie offers.
  • If I sign up to a free trial (free as long as you cancel by a certain date) I write the date in my diary and set a reminder on my phone to make damn sure I don't get it wrong!

The only one I've ever seen where you don't have to remember of your own accord is Amazon Prime - there's a checkbox you can select at any time (so you can do it immediately after signing up for the trial if you like, so you don't forget) that says "Automatically upgrade me to Amazon Prime when my free trial runs out" or not.

I thought that was quite good of them and it makes you feel like they're genuinely offering it to encourage you into thinking "wow, Amazon Prime is great, I'll sign up!" rather than trying to 'trick' you into subscribing for something you didn't want to.
  • Avoid any free trial where they ask for your credit card details for delivery, eg: the dazzlewhite scam , Cho Yung tea scam; Acai berry scams ; work at home 'kits' etc.
