What is a 'write-off settlement' in relation to an extended warranty?

I would like to cancel my extended warranty with Indesit/Domestic & General but this is proving to be very difficult. Looking at their terms & conditions, I found this information:

'You may cancel the plan at any time after the “right to change your mind” period outlined above, and we will refund a proportion of your plan fee relating to the remaining full months outstanding, unless your equipment has already been repaired, replaced or written-off, in which case no refund will be due.'

What I would like to know, if anyone can help, what does 'written-off' mean? When the Indesit engineer first came out to fix my appliance (cooker hood) he said he couldn't fix it and I was advised that I could cancel the policy and Indesit offered me a new cooker hood at a 'discounted rate'.

However, Indesit are now refusing to cancel my policy because they said my appliance had been tampered with (prior to taking out the extended warranty, I got an independent electrician to try and fix my appliance, he tried but couldn't fix it).

So, can anyone advise me if I am still within my rights to cancel the policy or if, because the Indesit engineer couldn't fix my appliance and I bought a new one, that means my appliance has been written off and I must continue with my policy?

Just a bit of additional info, Indesit have advised me 3 times that I can cancel my policy and get a full refund. It's only when I called today they have decided not to give me a refund so now I need to know if I am legally entitled to cancel my policy.

    Written off means it will not be repaired for one reason or another and you would get a replacement instead. So could be economical reasons IE repair cost £300 but item only cost £200 to replace.

    Hi, you need to make sure that it is Domestic and General you are speaking to when asking to cancel the policy, not indesit. Normally i think you can cancel the policy, im assuming that dom gen have received a report about the 'tampering', and are refusing to refund the cost of the policy, is this exclusion mentioned in their terms and conditions?
  • If you made a claim and D&G had a payout of any sort (i.e you paid some and they paid some) then you can't cancel it.

    Finding an insurance policy which can be cancelled after a claim is very unusual.
