Dish Washer Trips Electric

My dishwasher sets off ok then causes the electric to trip..when this happens there seems to be a litle smell of burning from the back of the dishwasher ! Any ideas ?

When the MCB is re set the dishwasher works again so does seems to be a permanent fault !

My guess is you've got an iffy pump. Whatever it is you'll need a repairman.

How old is the machine?

The machine is about 4 years old but has hardly been used !

The MCB is designed to isolate the current when there is an electrical fault, the smell of burning should give a hint that this was not a randon trigger event but a potentially serious and dangerous event. By turning it back on again and using the machine is a risk.
Do you have small children that play near the machine??:eek:

Is it the circuit breaker or the Earth leakage trip that's going, water and electricity is a deadly combination.
Unplug it and call in an electrician.

I dont plan to use the dishwasher again I just turned it back on to see if it would trip the MCB stright away to try and narrow down the cause of the fault!

What would you expect an electrictian do ?

It could be an electrical/electronic fault, however there is water or possibly water spray in close proximity.

I would not call a domestic electrician whose resonsibility would generally stop at repairing "white goods" but a specialist in domestic appliance repair.

It may just be carbon brushes "arcing" on the commutator. That would provide the smell. But it could be a failed rectifier/zener diode or resistors overheating for example on the circuit boards. But it could be anything and none of the above.

An honest domestic appliance repair man/woman (person :lipsrseal) should be able to help.

Get it sorted asap by an expert, a friend's dishwasher caught their house on fire one night and they were lucky to escape with their lives.

Don't call an electrician. No, seriously. Call a reputable 'white goods' company for an engineer. Really, there is a difference. An electrician does not necessarily know how to fix a dishwasher.
For what it's worth, my money would be on the heater inside the machine. It's quite common for all appliances that use a heater. Washing machines, electric cookers, tumble driers etc. It seems to be the weakest link. (I won't say it).

yeah I think its something to do with the heating elecment as it was at this time I could smell the burning and the electric triped off. If have never looked inside a dishwasher is there a heating element like in a kettle that will probably need replacing ?
