Hi,

We have just bought our first home in February. I was wondering what the sensible options are for insurance when you buy a house?

You have bought the house and it isn't insured?

You need to get buildings insurance (unless it is leasehold and the freeholder arranged this)
Contents insurance is usualy sensible
You may like to take out a maintenance contract on your boiler/heating system
Life insurance if you have dependants
Income protection for yourself to help pay the mortgage, other payments and living expenses... there are lots of options depending on what you want covered, how and how much

If you want an answer relevant to you regarding protections other than home insurance, find a good IFA that comes with good recomendations from friends and or family and ask for a consultation. Most IFA's won't bother with home insurance, though should be happy to advise about the differenct levels of cover etc.
