    Can you open the Task Manager by pressing [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del]? You may be able to run a few things from there.

    Try running regedit from there.

    unfortunately, it still not allowing me to run regedit from there. It keeps asking me which program i would like to use to open the application. thank you anyway; if you have any further suggestions please let me know

    Well... you could try this, though frankly wiping the disk and reinstalling the operating system is likely to be easier.

    According to Wikipedia, you can edit your registry with it.

    thanks, i'll havr a look at it. Not be very gifted when it comes to computers. If i wiped the disk and reinstalled the OS, i take it i would lose all my installed programs?

    Yes. Considering the current state of your system, that's probably for the best. There's no telling how widespread the infection is, assuming that's what it is.

    If you decide to have a crack at using the SystemRescueCD, try using the included anti-malware utilities to scan your hard disk. You never know - it might actually find and remove the little nuisance.
