Cordless mouse - not!!!!

Options
I apologise in advance for my lack of tech skills - but...........

Have Dell laptop wirelessly connected to router. Could not get used to mouse pad so invested in logitech laser cordless mouse, hoped to be able to use both.

Problem is this - I can use both, but can only use mouse if base station is plugged into laptop, if I remove usb base cable from laptop then I cannot use mouse. Surely the whole point of cordless is just that.

Is there something that is going over my head here!!!!!!! (wouldn't be the first time).

Thanks.

I'm not sure I've understood you correctly. You need to plug something into the laptop that acts as a receiver for the cordless mouse. The mouse then communicates with this wirelessly. Is this not what is happening?

the mouse needs a receiver to communicate between the mouse and the laptop. Otherwise you could sit in an office using your mouse and you'll take over everybodyelses mouse as well.

The two things are totally separate. Your laptop communicates to the router via wireless and your mouse communicates to it's USB dongle which therefore needs to be plugged in for it to work.

I understand now, the way you both explained it makes sense.

Controlling other peoples mice in an office sure sounds like fun though :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

If your laptop has Bluetooth built-in, then Logitech also produce a cordless mouse which uses Bluetooth instead of the external transmitter:

If your laptop doesn't have built-in Bluetooth, buying a specific laptop mouse with a small receiver may work better than your current mouse:

LOL yes as Gavin says, the only way to have a 'truly wireless' mouse on your laptop is with Bluetooth (if your laptop has it built in). I have the Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse and it works fine with the built-in Bluetooth on my Apple Mac Mini (as it did with the PowerBook G4 before it).
