I wanted to convert some audio cassettes to MP3 and wanted to know the best and cheapest way of doing this. I've seen a converter on Expansys for £82 but wanted to know if there was any other ways. The comnverter there seems to be an internal one and I need an external one.
Cheers.
Cheers.

A few years back i plugged a cable from the headphone socket into the line in on the sound card, played the stereo and used a sound recorder on the PC (to a wave file). The quality wasn't brilliant but the tape quality was a bit crap to start with so it could have worked ok with a better tape.0

As SG says, plug it into line in (Not microphone-in!), adjust the volume carefully, too high and you will get clipping, too low and you'll get tape noise. Use something like audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ to record it to wav. Then convert to MP3 .. http://www.etree.org/mkw.html
Shouldn't cost you a penny..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I did quite a few a couple of years back - quality wasn't bad using a HiFi deck (Aiwa headphone out) and CDex software (freeware).
ps - you may need something a bit more sophisticated if you want to split the tapes into individual tracks (or a lot of manual effort..).0 -
I use this

you can get the 2005 version that I use for alot less on ebay etc
splits into tracks , removes tape hiss etc and burns to CD
not free but good bit of softwareEx forum ambassador

Dragging up the past a bit here!
I have just found a box or six of old tapes that I'd like to get onto cd. The software bit is quite self-explanatory, but wht sort of cable do I need and more importantly (I supose) where do I get it from?

Should just be 3.5mm jack plug to 3.5mm jack plug if you have a tape player with a headphone socket. £3.49 in Maplin..0
