It would be classed as a cash advance and be charged accordingly.0

Read up on holiday money on this site. For usage abroad, the aim is more along the lines of how to minimise foreign usage fees/charges. You might even be able to get a bit of cashback with Amex....all this and more info is available on this site.
It helps if you have a read first then ask for advice0 -
M&S travel money is treated as a purchase when bought with an M&S credit card. As such, you'll enjoy 10 months 0% interest on your holiday spending money.0

Yes, the card to go for would be M&S. It is specialised card for foreign cash currency.
The other way would be getting Post Office card and pay wherever you can by card - but only pay by it, not withdraw cash from it.0 -
For purchases you could always get American express platinum cashback.
Their is a comission charge of 2.73% for conversion from $ to £s BUT there is 5% cashback meaining you get 2.4% cashback in your pocket.
You may also be able to use quidco.
Make sure you pay in $s though and not £s.
If a shop ask you which currency you want to pay in then say $s because the shop will undoubtedly charge you more for conversion than AMEX.0
