What tradesmen put up fences to block a garage on the drive?

Hi all,

I have a garage that is to the side of the house and to the back of it. I want to get a fence panel put up and a gate entrance that takes you to the garage and the back garden. I have rang gardeners and a couple of general builders but they can't do it for weeks. All of them said about making the fence themselves rather than use a panel from B&Q etc. Can I call a carpenter to do this work? Who am I best to use? A couple have said about digging in to the concrete to add the one post needed and another has said that they can drill a metal plate in and the post would go in this.

Any advice would be appreciated of what other type of tradesmen can I use

My panel fence was put up by a gardener. In my experience posts dug out properly and concreted into a hole work better than the metal plates.

Any fencing contractor should be able to do this easily, in fact any competent diyer or handyman should be able to help. What is your driveway made off, as I agree, concreting a post in is the way to go

    The drive is concrete.

Can a person who advertises as an Handyman do the job as well then or a carpenter?

    Thanks

I am a carpenter and I do this sort of work, but any fencing contractor, builder, landscaper, handyman, etc should be more than capable of doing it.

As for the post, i would never use one of the bolt on plates - It's a bodge and can't take anywhere near the leverage that a post concreted 2 foot into the ground can.

And as for the panel, the chances are a standard panel would have to be cut to fit so i would probably recomend building a feather edge fence to fill the gap. It's a lot stronger and better looking than a panel.

Yep, any handyman should be able to do it. To concrete post in, they will have to either chisel a hole through the concrete on the drive, or use an angle grinder to cut through, then concrete the post in as others have said. I would personally consider a bigger than average post (say 6"x6" or 8"x8") like you get farmgates attached to. You can get them at any agricultural merchants or any woodyard type places should be able to get hold of them. They will be a lot more robust than using a normal fencing post, especially if you intend to hang a heavy gate and it gets lots of use.

The guy suggested a bolt plate because there is a drain there and we are not sure where it runs. Some other people have not said about the drain when they have talked about concreting it.

If you are talking about an inspection cover, just lift the cover off and you will be able to see which way the drain runs. Alternatively if it is a drain at the side of the house that say a sink overflow flows into, then you should be able to look around the drive/garden and find a nearby inspection cover which will show you which way the drain runs. Even if you can't find out, a drain should be a good 18" to 2' undergound so once the concrete of the drive is broken through you just need to be a bit careful when digging the rest of the hole manually. Even if the drain were directly underneath then I doubt you will go down far enough to reach it
