How long does it take?

I found the house I wanted at the end of Jan. Mortgage was already approved. I have no chain and nor do the vendors... I'm getting a bit annoyed with how long they are taking to get certificates for the new windows that have been put in. All they need to do is get the council round to check them - which can apparently be done in 2 days! Their solicitor has known that this will be required since the 10th of Feb!
On the original offer confirmation from estate agents I was told that my offer was accepted on the condition of exchange within 4 to 6 weeks.
We both want a quick sale but the vendors solicitor seems incapable of working quickly and has no idea of urgency.
What can I do? Any suggestions as to how to move things along? I've chased my solicitor and estate agent. What would be an average length of time to expect for completion?

That does seem a long time! We are house swapping so our situation is a little easier. That said we have hoping to exchange and complete within 4 weeks of our original offer.

They could even get the company that put the windows in to issue a certificate as FENSA is self-regulating.

Thanks Silvercar, I thought that as well. However the window company has vanished! Better get them checked I think - particularly as the Window company isn't around!
