Housing Benefit Help for Mentally ill

I think you may need to speak to a disability benefits advisor as my son has bi-polar and gets income support + severe disablement allowance+DLA...he also gets HB as he now rents a house a few doors up from me..his HB obviously doesn't pay all his rent but he pays the extra £35 p/w out of his benefits.
His CPN is also a good person to help you through the minefield.GL with it all.0 -
Thanks Taxi73, x0

I think it's not very fair sometimes on the people that pay for it through their taxes too.0 -
Well I am glad that from the sounds of things you are fortunate enough not to be in a situation where you have no choice. I don't want anyone to have to contribute anything for me and my family but like many others I feel trapped and see no way out of my situtation at present. To be honest the taxes would be unlikely to go down even if the government didn't pay the small amount they do towards supporting carers, they'd probably just take it for something else :rolleyes:0

I'm not 100% certain but I thought there were some exemptions to the housing beneift rules for situations like this, as to put someone into the care of the local authority costs the authority far far more than housing benefit. Pretty sure you would have to go down the road though of having care assessments etc done. Will ask my mum when shes back early next week as its her who told me this. I think it was my brothers social worker who suggested this (my brother lives full time with my mum as he is mentally disabled)There are also this called direct payments, althoug I;m not sure if they would be applicable in this situation0

Does she currently rent out a room? Would she not be entiteld to pension tax credits?
Does she only have one spare room?
AFAIK tax credits are not affected by rent a room scheme.
