How Do I Improve my Credit rating?

in Credit cards
Hi,
I have never been on here before but I am in desparate need of help!
I did a zero % balance transfer with Virgin credit card in January. I was paying off well over the minimum each month, and in May I upped it to £260 per month. I have paid on the 3rd or 5th of each month, every month without fail.
I have since realised that Virgin had the billing date as much later in the month, so when I paid on the 5th, this was seen as 'late', therefore incurring a late charge and forfeiting my zero balance transfer, hence being charged interest also.
I called up and they refused to give me the money back for these charges, and I intend to puruse for them. However, the issue which really concerns me is that my credit rating will be very poor now. I cannot get another credit card and do a zero balance transfer because Virgin have made my rating so poor that no-one wants to give me another credit card!
Does anyone have any advice as to how I can improve my rating? I am hoping to buy a house next year but have no chance at the moment!!!
Any help would be gratefully received!
Thanks
