Quote for re-tiling bathroom

We are having our bathroom re-tiled due to the previous owner making a complete hash of it. We have had two quotes in so far, for the following work:
  • Remove all existing wall tiles and make good
  • Remove toilet, sink, shower
  • Rebuild false wall behind shower (to box in mixer pipework) and install Aquaboard to prevent leaks
  • Remove floor tiles
  • Lay plywood on floor to provide base for new floor tiles
  • Retile all walls
  • Retile floor
  • Refit furnishings

This is based on 16sq m of wall tiles, and 3sq m of floor tiles in the West Yorkshire area.

The first quote provided was £700. This was labour only, and was based on us supplying all adhesives, grouts and required trims. The tiler has supplied a list of exactly what he would need, and I have priced this up to £60 give or take £10.

The second quote, which included all the above materials, was £1210.

We have a third tiler coming to give us a quote tomorrow, so we will then have three quotes. In all cases we will be supplying our own wall and floor tiles.

Are these quotes realistic, expensive, cheap? Thanks :)

Let your tiler supply the adhesive and grouts,This way you should get the right items first time round and should have no warranty issues

£60-£70 to tile a bathroom with material is way too cheap

You need at least one sheet of 12mm WPB plywood £18

4 bags of white keraquick for walls £60

1 bag of white keraquick with latex additive for extra flex £35

    10kg white mapei grout £15

estimate of 3-4 sheets of hardibacker board £30-40

    trims in plastic £10

I would get a tiler in who would tank the walls with a waterproof membrane to reduce the risk of water leakage in the years to come, The homelux stuff costs £40

This excludes any timber and fixings required to make good walls and studwork

Pay cheap and you will be re-doing your bathroom in 3 years or less,Buy genuine trade adhesives and grout and you will have no issues

I agree, first quote sounds way too cheap, I would have expected nearer the second quote and andyhops prices seem nearer the mark for materials, + there is the cost of new sealants, new plumbing fittings (if the old ones are worn and need replacing) etc etc that you haven't mentioned (alright, not expensive, but all adds up). Also, stating the obvious, but make sure you over order on the tiles (tiler should advise you by how much). It's easy for a non professional to underestimate the wastage

Materials will cost £200-£300 and nigh on a weeks graft so, £1210 is a tad high £900 to £1000 is a fair price, but he has had the benefit of seeing the job and might know something we don't!

£60 for materials? :D If only.

Just to follow up on this for some closure, our third quote came in at £540 including removal and refitting of all appliances, and including all materials, and he was able to do the work within a week of booking it. It has taken him a little over a week to do but the job is absolutely spot on, no issues whatsoever.

    I'm happy :D

My concern would be with the quality of materials used for that price. Tiling onto a ply base requires a particular type of adhesive for instance. Use the wrong one or a poor quality one and within 6 months your tiles will be up again. I also wonder why he was so readily available, most good tradesmen will require a wait. Those that are able to work quickly may be free because no-one else will use them.

That said, maybe some of us are just too cynincal and you did just get the bargain of the year and all will be fine. It does happen, albeit rarely. :D

    £1200 - £700 Labour only - £540 Including materials.

£540 for over a weeks work, minus materials? Thats just way too cheap, suspiciously cheap, I feel a skimping on materials and quailty has happened here, but best of luck with it anyway.

Judging by the amount of equipment he brought into our house to use, and the time and care he has taken to rectify a lot of fiddly hidden faults (including rotten wood, a wall that wasn't straight and lots and lots of holes in the plasterboard), and many awkward shaped cuts in the bathroom, I would say that the job is a professional one, and we just got very very lucky on the price. Solid working from 8am to 4pm every day of the week too.

As you say, time will tell. However, we are very very happy with the result and the bloke only lives 5min down the road from us so we know where he is if anything goes wrong....

I think that sounds a bit too cheap too.

I paid £250 in tile adhesive alone (I bought this myself) for my 1.5m x 3m bathroom
