Can banks close accounts

I am thinking of reclaiming charges but am wondering whether the bank could then close accounts and request payment of any overdrafts, loans etc if succesful. My husband and I have both personal accounts and a business account under the same bank both of which have incurred charges over the year. Has anyone had any experience of this happening with their bank?

The answer is NO they can't. There were a number of cases prior to the OFT test case where accounts were closed as a result of people claiming charges back. The FSA Waiver does prevent this from happening directly as a result of claiming charges back.I am thinking of reclaiming charges but am wondering whether the bank could then close accounts and request payment of any overdrafts, loans etc if succesful. Thanks for the response - I thought I remembered hearing that certain establishments were closing accounts at the start of this debate.
I think I will jump on the wagon and get my letter in - better late than never. I should imagine that the amounts that they have charged us over the years would pay off any amounts that we owe them and more0
