Swiftcover:European Motoring only "allowed" for 72 Hrs

My "comprehensive" car insurance certificate with Swiftsure reads "This Certificate of Motor Insurance takes the place of an International Motor Insurance Card (Green Card) and is evidence that the insurance extends to include the compulsory motor insurance requirements of any member country of the European Union; Norway & Switzerland".
I'm off to France for a week this summer, so I read through the small print in the policy
on line.
In the policy it says cover is limited to 72 hours and an extension must be bought for longer stays.
Could the real truth of this situation be:
"You can go to the rest of the EU, but if you do without purchasing additional cover, you are on Third Party Only".
I thought the idea was that we are part of a Common Market, so a "stay abroad for more than 72 hours and you are illegal" condition would not be allowed

Yes - I think that's pretty standard for car insurance."stay abroad for more than 72 hours and you are illegal"
It's not illegal to have 3rd party only cover.
In fact I've chosen it deliberately in the past.
You need to clarify but I believe the extension would be for comprehensive cover and not for basic cover.0 -
Swiftcover giving you a 3 days trip comprehensive cover abroad is a bonus! Generally this isn't included in mainstream comprehensive cover.
Note that the swiftcover "free" 3 days cover isn't for the first 3 days of a longer trip. If your trip abroad is planned to be longer than 72 hours, then you only have legal cover from the outset (unless you arrange an extension of your policy to give comprehensive cover throughout the trip)0
