If I don't work Monday, what to bank hols mean?

I recently went down to a 4 day week (Tues - Fri) and was wondering how this affects Bank Holidays. I read a couple of sites on the web that say it affects holiday at least (given that it's still a paid day for everyone else on full time), but my employer just said that it doesn't mean anything: if I don't work Mondays then bank holidays mean nothing to my employment. Is this true?

Thanks

Isn't that a good thing? You get all Mondays off and you never have to work a bank holiday!

Some people have no option but to work Bank Holidays for no extra pay...maybe a day in lieu...

it may be a paid day for everyone else, but i'll bet it's taken out of their holiday entitlement.

A previous job I had clearly stated that we got XX days paid hols plus bank holidays that fell on days normally worked. This meant that if you didn't work Mondays you lost out. I'm told that is perfectly legal providing you get the statutory min holiday of 28 days if full time or pro rata.

You are not entitled to anything for a day that you don't normally work.

Also, this is from the Direct Gov website:

"You don't have an automatic right to paid leave on bank and public holidays, though many people receive the day off work. Any right to time off or extra pay for working on a bank holiday depends on the terms of your contract of employment."

It is unlawful for an employer to treat a part-timer less favourably than someone working part-time.

Therefore if a full-time person receives, say, 20 days holiday plus 8 bank holidays, the part-time person should receive holiday pro rata. That is, they get the same amount of holiday proportionately. It is just the case that the employer is telling the employee when they take particular days of their entitlement. (For some part-timers, they would have more of their entitlement dictated by the employer because they work Mondays but not Fridays.)
