Well, operating systems have really got stuck in a rut over the past decade; UNIX is 40 years old and is still the best offering, and Windows is based on precisely the same technology but isn't quite as good.
    Two quite unbelievable statements.

Stuck in a rut? What about the ongoing development creaky old 40 year old Unix? All the progress being made with Linux? What about MacOS X - I have never used a better desktop OS (and I'm a Unix professional).

Windows based on precisely the same technology as Unix. Where do you get that from?

I was going to challenge those statements too but there was so much that needed correcting I decided that life was too short to bother.

Good luck with the enlightenment :)

If the operating source code to Chrome OS is to be open then what development tools will the contributors use ? What hardware will the operating system target ? Who will write the drivers for the hardware ? It might make sense for the hardware to be a virtual machine.

I think this is good news, they'll give Microsoft some meaningful competition at last. Not that I've anything against MS but could lead to improvements all round.

Well competition is always welcome but I'm not so sure Google will do a good job. At least, not outside of narrowly defined areas anyway.

They just want to be Microsoft with that jucy 90% market share, and it's just not going to happen :rotfl:

1). I'd assume Google will release an SDK, much like they have for Android. Might want to brush up on your C and Java in preparation though.

2). They're aiming for Netbooks to be onsale next year with it on, whether it's scalable remains unknown.

    3). Google/Netbook manufacturer/OS Community. Take your pick.

Microsoft haven't always had a 90% market share, and it seems a little near-sighted to think they will forever.

Have Apple started making OS X available for netbooks?

Chrome OS is going to be another Linux distro. I guess they'll make the browser and shell much more integrated. Hmm, sort of like Windows Active Desktop. :D

Nothing to see here, move along...

Microsoft already has plenty of competition on netbooks from Linux.

Microsoft however doesn't much like competition, which is why it gives away its XP licences for netbooks.

It can't keep that up forever though.
