Okay just a couple of questions:

Are the companies sending letters to an incorrect address despite the fact that you have told them the correct address - if so they are in breach of data protection laws. If you haven't already send them a letter stating your correct address by recorded delivery stating that if they continue to use the incorrect address you will contact the financial ombudsman.

Secondly with regard to job applications etc, I assume you are putting the correct address on these so does that mean that the post person is delivering to the wrong address (this does happen occaisionally) if so and it is happening often, you can have the post office keep your mail for collection or else you can have it so that your post persons mail is all checked by a supervisor and noted before it is posted.

Thirdly regarding your neighbours opening your mail this is not a moral issue but is in fact breaking the law under the telecomunications act.

Not sure if any of this helps.

  • Hi this is not a bankruptcy query but an address one

My parents bought a new house and after they moved in and had the mortgage sorted etc the house builders changed the house numbers.

They sorted out the mortgage and utilities right away (so many issues there)

They still recieve bank statements, credit cards and mortgage letters for their neighbours who don't seem to have bothered changing the address. I know that credit is based on a person's name and not just their address, but if a mortgage company wanted to reposses a house, surely they would on the address the mortgage was for (if that makes sense)

My folks have just been putting their letters throught their door when they recieve them
    What should they be doing?

    Thanks
    Leanne

Start returning them to sender and not passing them on to the previous owners. They have no incentive to change details. Put them into a larger envelope with the new address on.

It may not work though and you will need to do it lots of times.

A bank would not repossess the address that is listed on a letter. And as your parents can prove they own the property they live in then don't worry about it at all.

debt doctor - that was not what I was advised, I was actually given quite short shrift that as I was still looking for contract work I couldn't therefore be classified as unemployed "otherwise all freelancers would be signing on!".

I was told that because I was getting some money coming in from my Ebay sales that it would count as income. I don't get this at all, because I was looking for work, I was using my Ebay money to job hunt. The way it was all presented to me was "you are self employed - you have to prove that you are unemployed".

I can't really go and sign on now because I start my new job on Monday, would there be any point. You know I could have really done with help with the rent, because now I am in arears and I need to scrape together what I am selling on Ebay to just make up the shortfall.

Thank you at least I know if it all goes pearshaped with my new work I would be entitled to something.

Yet again the DWP make a horrendous mess of something quite simple.:mad:If you are self employed and your work dries up then you sign on looking for work as an employee AND on the look out for more self employed work.

To qualify you must be actively seeking work, currently working less than 16 hours per week.Have less than £16 000 savings and have little or no income. You would need to have signed a 'job seekers agreement' which says things like " I will pop in to the job centre once per week to look for work, send off CV's" etc.

I would make a complaint to the Independent Case Examiner Stating you were actively seeking any work and refused benefit. With or without JSA you would also have been entitled to maximum housing and council tax benefit, you should apply for these to be backdated citing incorrect advice from the DWP as your reason for not claiming.( max backdate 3 months)

Go on 'entitled to' (someone will post the link i'm sure) to check your past and future benefits.

....".and as for selling your own stuff on ebay counts as income" that Moron at the DWP really does deserve a slap. So what does he/she/It think self employed people do when the work dries up ? Do they all starve to death ?:mad::mad:

ps Ill post the address to complain to later.

I work in the Jobcentre and I sign many, many people per week who were self-employed and the work dried up. They are actively seeking both new avenues of self employment and paid employment. They are entitled to JSA under an income assessment, though not normally a contributions assessment. I can't speak to their entitlement to anything else though, but I believe most are claiming Housing benefit and Council Tax benefit also.

I also sign a few people each week who are STILL self employed/freelancers but are working under 16 hours per week on those tasks. All they need to do is declare their hours and earnings so the relevant calculations can be made as to their entitlement. Some don't receive much by way of actual money, but they are still entitled nonetheless.

You will have to agree to look for paid employment but as you are already doing so, as far as I am concerned, you're entitled and should be claiming.

Also, unless you're running a business on eBay by selling things you've actively bought to sell, that shouldn't count as income. And even if it did, you could cease that to make a claim to benefit.

Call new claims today and get it sorted. Also, if you've already made a claim and been refused (as you seem to be), make a claim to have it backdated to the date of your first contact as you were advised incorrectly. You'll need to show proof of your jobsearch for that period though.

Identify which neighbours are getting/opening "your" mail

Knock up a decent looking hoax letter from the lottery/heir hunters looking for beneficiaries of wills, etc and send em letters

"We are sorry to bother you but as a neighbour of Mr *****, and with us being unable to contact him direct, would you (for a fee of course) be willing to contact us with any contact information you may have for him"

the number will, of course, direct em to a £5/minute call line....or some heavy breathing porno phone line...

Hello - wow so many responses!

The fact is that I start my new job next Monday, surely going back to the DWP is now a waste of time as I should have been given the correct details previously. It will look really odd, won't it?

The other point is what somebody said about the telecommunications law thing - can you give me the exact clause please, because from what I was told by the post office is that it is that their contract is with an address not a named individual and it becomes a moral and ethical issue as soon as the letter is delivered through the letterbox. If you can prove otherwise and show me the reference I would be interested in taking it back to the PO.

    Thanks for everybody's responses.
