Receipt?

I'm a pensioner who has been doing small gardening jobs for a few friends and neighbours to supplement my pension by a few pounds a week. One of these runs a B & B and has asked me for a receipt. Does this mean I will now be on the Inland Revenue's radar? Do they cross check?

If they have asked for a receipt then they are planning to put in through their books I would imagine. It will only be cross-referenced if they get a tax inspection and they pick your receipt for checking. This can happen anytime at random and they go back over 6 years.

If they're 'friends' surely they know your 'situation' so why are they asking for a receipt if they know you're doing a bit of fiddle?

Dont worry, give a personal receipt, write it on paper, saying "Gardening services £20" sign it and thats it, thats all window cleaners do you know.

Apart from the fact that we don't condone or encourage illegal behaviour on this site, I wonder if the OP has checked that they are getting all the benefits they should? eg Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit, any discounts for sole occupancy or disability (although I guess that's less likely if fit enough to be gardening!)

Personally I would feel it better to declare all income than risk a nasty mess later on, especially as the tax involved will probably be minimal anyway!
