Do your children do chores?

I have started to give my children some chores to do around the house (they are 7 and 3 - a bit young, I know!) They unload the dishwasher and put away (the little one is only allowed to bring out the plastic items!) They also fold their clothes up at night (or put in the wash if dirty). They also tidy up the living room a bit before going to bed (basicaly putting away the toys they have been playing with). Do you think they are too young to be given chores or do you think they should be earning their pocket money?! What chores do you give your children?

  • You cannot start them too young - as a tot I had my own duster and I would dust with my mum (probably wasnt very good at it but got me in the habit).
The value of money thing is too much for a 3 year old to comprehend but the 7 year old should be able to see to get £Y I have to do X.

DD is 8.5 and has been doing chores to earn pocket money since she was 6. Wouldn't have it any other way - nothing comes handed on a plate in my world! She actually says things like 'if I work for so and so minutes, I can afford...'

Our kids have always helped to keep the house clean and tidy but they've never had money for it. It's just what you do to keep the place you live in a nice place to be. We all contribute to getting things dirty and untidy and we all help to clean and tidy it.

Have five kids from 9yrs down and insist they all do there bit. Think its great training. Kids shouldn't take too much for granted but of course should be allowed to be kids. My wee ones love doing wee jobs as long as its not during a favourite programme!

I would say yes. They're 14/9 and it amounts to 5/10 mins drying up & putting away etc- and feeding the dog/cats. Maybe a quick run round with the hoover over the weekend on occasion.

They'd say no, it's slavery.

All should contribute to keeping the home tidy, helping with meals, washing up etc according to age and ability. I think children should be expected ( won't always succeed, I know! ) to tidy their toys, bedroom, clothes anyway - not for money, but could gradually do some small chores to earn money eg dusting, hoovering, cleaning wash basins, car washing, put bins out....

Stick 'em up the chimney and give them something to complain about.

I don't consider tiding up after oneself to be a chore either, just proper manners.

By giving your children chores you are helping them gain independence. My children are 14 and six and both help out. Doing this from a young age gives them skills they can use in later life.

Yes, our DD gets £2.00 a week pocket money, she is 10. She has to keep have her room tidy every Saturday morning - what she does with it in between is up to her, if she makes a big mess then it's more weekend wasted. She does complain that other kids don't have to tidy, their mums do their room for them, but I think that's ridiculous. All she has to do is tidy it, we do the cleaning and hoovering.

To earn her pocket money she has to set the table for dinner and take the wheelie bin down/up the drive on bin days. We ave worked it out and her horuly rate is about the same as her Dad and me earn, so she's doing quite well.
